NMCC gets first win of the soccer season

The Northern Maine Community College mens’ soccer team picked up its first victory of the season Sunday, defeating Central Maine CC in Auburn, 1-0.

The Falcons, who began the season with seven consecutive losses, were able to avenge a 6-0 early-season home loss to the Mustangs thanks to a goal by Jacob Lassonde of Merrill in the 62nd minute of the match. That goal, assisted by Kyle Murray of Bridgewater, stood up in NMCC’s 1-0 triumph.

“We played another strong defensive game, were patient and waited for our chance to counter attack,” said NMCC coach Bill Casavant, “and Jake finished with a nice header. I couldn’t be happier for the players as they have worked hard, improved each game and deserved to win,” he added.

Chad McCarthy of Caribou recorded the shutout in goal with eight saves on 20 shots.

The previous afternoon, the Falcons lost a tough 1-0 match at SMCC. The lone goal came at the 17:50 mark of the first half off the foot of the Sea Wolves’ Wadhah Al-Shammari.

“I thought we played a very strong defensive game for 90 minutes,” said Casavant, whose team fell to SMCC at home three weeks ago by a 7-1 margin. “Today we wanted to defend our goal and give ourselves a chance to stay in the game.”

McCarthy made 12 saves on 36 shots for the Falcons.
