Washburn Fun Day
Mill Pond Park Day will be held on Saturday, June 23, at the picnic area and lawn by the Mill Pond. This event is sponsored by the Washburn Rotary and is a great chance for all to come together and support this important revitalization effort. The activities begin around 11 a.m. and go through until approximately 3 p.m.
Included in this Second Annual Mill Pond Park will be a chicken barbeque starting at 11 a.m. and lasting until the chicken is gone. The chicken is being supplied by the Washburn Rotary and cooked by the ‘chefs’ of the Washburn Fire Department. Children’s games will be held from 12 noon to 2 p.m., and there will be face painting, balloons, a fun duck race, paddle boat rides and live kids’ karaoke.
There are some great prizes available including a child’s battery-operated 4-wheeler, an iPod, a satellite radio, several pieces of recreation equipment and lots more. Tickets are available at the Washburn Town Office at a cost of $5 each or three for $10. There are also $1 raffle tickets available for a wide array of smaller door prizes. Tickets will be drawn at the Mill Pond Park area from 2:30 to 3 p.m.
This is a chance for us to show our community support and help raise funds for the new playground equipment for the Mill Pond Park Playground. Come and learn about the plans for the inter-connecting walking trail between the Thomas Brewer Park and the Mill Pond Park.
It will be a fun day filled with good food, day-long music and great times for one and all. Co-Chairs for this event are Rotarians Mike Umphrey and Kermit Fuller. For further information, contact Kermit at 455-0962.

Special birthday party
Rosanna Humphrey of Washburn had some surprise visitors join her in celebration of her ninetieth birthday. Her nephew, Raymond Humphrey and his wife, Ardis, along with their granddaughters, Jenica and Jayden Harris, took her a birthday cake that was made by Ardis.
She received several phone calls and lots of cards for her birthday and she also enjoyed visits from her daughter Linda and her husband Larry Bragg, and they brought her another birthday cake and from her son Tom Humphrey, grandson Mark and his wife Diana Bragg and their children Nicholas and Carmen. Also joining the event were Diana Bragg’s parents, Frances and Nancy Carney of Ashland.
Rosanna helped her husband Milford on the family farm for many years and was a hard worker. Up until the past two years she has tended her garden, and she still goes down to the road and gets her mail. She is known for being a thoughtful person, sending lots of cards and notes to loved ones and remembering birthdays and anniversaries. She truly enjoys the August Festival, especially the gospel concert. Rosanna has two children, four grandsons and 10 great grandchildren.
Scout takes family to Florida
During the last popcorn sale fund-raiser for the Boy and Cub Scout troops of Washburn, Brandon Cropley sold the most and won the chance to have his name entered in the big contest for a trip to Disney World. The family and his troop were more than excited and pleased when it was announced that Brandon’s name was drawn, and he’d won the trip for four to the famous Florida attraction! Brandon took his father Gregg Cropley Jr. and his grandparents ‘“Papa’ and ‘Mimi’ Cropley as his guests. The family got together and paid extra fares in order to take Brandon’s aunts Heidi and Nicki as well.
The family stayed in an adjoining two-room suite at the All Star Sports Hotel and toured all four Disney World sites: The Magic Kingdom, MGM Studios, Animal Kingdom and Epcot Center. They took lots of photos and purchased a special Disney photo album to display them in, as well as a nice 8-by-10 photo frame that lights up and displays the whole family in front of the famous castle.
They got photos of lots of the stars including Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Peter Pan and Minnie Mouse. Brandon enjoyed some face makeup of a cat and got to see the 95 car and some items from the “Cars” movie, as well as many other things from Disney themes.
Brandon’s favorite thing on the two-day spree was the GM Test Tract where he “drove a car that takes a virtual tour of a race track, and worked something like a roller coaster.” He really enjoyed that ride, and the family was hard-pressed to get him away from it. He also enjoyed the Mission Space Center and the Wildlife Safari ride. According to the adults, Brandon went on most of the rides in the park, and two members of the entourage, Brandon and his dad, had to purchase some new sunglasses, as they forgot theirs on one of them. All in all, he tired the adults out.
The most un-favorite thing for Brandon was all the shopping! After each store, he’d ask if it was time to go on a ride again. The family knows he’ll be going back to Disney World again, as it was more than a memorable experience for him. Brandon’s Papa, Gregg Cropley Sr., was brought up in California and spent many days enjoying the rides at the original Disneyland, so he knows the feeling Brandon has for the attraction.
