Science Boot Camp  offers chance to explore

PRESQUE ISLE — The University of Maine at Presque Isle held its first ever Science Boot Camp event Aug. 8-12, providing students in grades 3 through 5 with an opportunity to explore the world of science through hands-on learning, experiments and critical-thinking activities.

ATTENDING SCIENCE CAMP — The University of Maine at Presque Isle recently announced the five winners of its Science Boot Camp writing contest. The camp, which takes place Aug. 8 to 12, will provide students in grades 3 through 5 with an opportunity to explore the world of science through hands-on learning, experiments and critical thinking activities. Topics include: severe weather, DNA, astronomy, chemistry, ecology and physics. Writing contest winners, who wrote about why they wanted to attend the camp, received scholarships that will go toward their camp tuition. They include, from left: Harleigh Brewer of Presque Isle, Katelyn Amero of Mapleton, Morgan Price of Frenchville and Abby Walker of Ashland. Camp topics included severe weather, DNA and biology, astronomy, rocks and minerals, chemistry and science experiments, ecology, food experiments and physics.

More than 60 students attended the camp.

“We are very pleased with how our first Science Boot Camp event turned out,” Mary Lawrence, UMPI director of conferences and special programs, said. “The students had a wonderful time, and they and their parents were really energized by what they were able to learn and do during the week.”

Ahead of the camp, the University announced the five winners of its Science Boot Camp writing contest. Writing contest winners — who wrote about why they wanted to attend the camp and received scholarships toward their camp tuition — included: Harleigh Brewer of Presque Isle, Katelyn Amero of Mapleton, Morgan Price of Frenchville, Abby Walker of Ashland and Rebecca Collins of Presque Isle.

Science Boot Camp scholarships were sponsored by Wal-Mart, the Foundation of the University at Presque Isle and Rod Brewer Designs.
