Chasin’ the Chasses
Donna and Dana Chasse headed out of Pennsylvania on Monday, June 20, and drove 469 miles into Ohio. They stopped for the night just east of Columbus and then continued another 457 miles to Illinois and Dana’s cousin’s home in O’Fallon. They did have to take shelter under an overpass during one heavy thunderstorm with 45-50 mph winds, but were able to continue on after the storm passed.
They spent a couple of days exploring Saint Louis and went up into the Arch. Donna enjoyed the view from the top of the arch, although she had to step up onto a child step in order to see out! They also went to a Cardinals baseball game and had a great time — even if it wasn‘t the Red Sox. Thursday they spend sightseeing and visited the Hard Rock Cafe.
On Friday they hit the road again and drove through Iowa into South Dakota. They did have to make some detours due to roads being flooded but also were able to see some Marines training. Donna states that there is “no way” she would ever voluntarily do what the Marines were doing, when she saw several of them hanging from a helicopter practicing rescues!
On Saturday, they drove 468 miles to Wall, S.D., and plan to visit several sites in the area. They want to go to the Badlands and have visited the Mitchell Corn Palace. They did see a bad storm on Sunday, with nickel-sized hail, but were in the motel, so they weren’t affected by the weather. They are having a great time!!
Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday morning, June 21, at 6:30 at the Aroostook Health Center. Visiting Rotarian Mark Shea gave an update on the new trail being cut at Big Rock. They plan to move the rails and terrain park toward the south part of the resort. They also plan to expand the ski school and Saturday program, which saw 40 to 50 young skiers each Saturday this past season.
Rotarian Jim Shaw gave an update on the accident he and his wife Deb were in recently. Jim is recovering from a bruised spleen and blood clots, while Deb recently went through another surgery on her broken wrist. They are both at home recovering but want to thank everyone for their support.
Rotarian Larry Fletcher gave a classification. He has been in the club since the early 1980s. He was born in Mars Hill and has lived here for almost his entire life. He did move south for about 10 years, but eventually moved back “home” from Bridgewater. He has a garage and adult daycare center in Mars Hill.
Rotarian Tori Barber also gave her classification. She was born in Presque Isle and worked part-time in a local bank. She joined Katahdin Trust full-time in 1991 and is currently the branch manager in Mars Hill.
