Trooper hits second moose

Police are warning motorists to watch for moose and deer, following the second accident involving a state trooper striking a moose in Aroostook County.

State Trooper Fred Thomas escaped serious injury early the morning of June 15 when his cruiser collided with a moose just north of Caribou on U.S. Route 1, marking the second time in three weeks that a trooper has collided with an animal. Trooper Chuck Michaud was slightly injured when he was involved in a similar accident May 29 on Route 228 in Woodland.

Thomas had just finished investigating another moose collision about a half mile away involving a tractor trailer, which killed the animal and caused considerable damage to the truck but no injury to the driver.

In the trooper’s accident, Thomas was showered in broken glass and suffered bumps and bruises when the moose struck the windshield. He was treated and released from Cary Medical Center. The cruiser sustained extensive damage in the crash.

This is the second time Thomas has been involved in a collision with a moose. The first occurred in 2007 in Westfield — also on a Wednesday and U.S. Route 1.
