3 on 3 Basketball Tournament

Car show

Do you have a vehicle that is stored inside and you only take it out for “special” occasions? Does it take up precious space in your garage, leaving you to park your commuter vehicle outside? If you have a vehicle like that, then this is the perfect opportunity to drive that car or truck to a public event, show it off and let others appreciate it, too!
Jim’s Automotive and Classic Appraisals will be sponsoring a non-competitive classic car show Saturday, June 25 across from the Lion’s Hall in downtown Mapleton from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Car and truck owners are encouraged to bring their prized vehicles and park them to allow others to enjoy them, as well! After the show, owners are invited to join the annual Mapleton Daze parade that will run from the Dudley Road to the Elementary School.
Please contact Jim Burrill at 762-5131 for more information and to register.

Bazaar Downtown

New to this year’s Mapleton Daze celebration is the “Bazaar Downtown.” This is a flea market/anything acceptable/trash and treasure sort of event that will take place all day Saturday, June 25. To participate, please bring your own table, set it up along the sidewalk and sell or promote whatever you like! The Committee is looking to have a variety of tables set up including crafts, small business promotion, yard sale items, raffles, food (such as lemonade, baked potatoes, popcorn, water), collectables, demonstrations, etc. This is the perfect chance to earn some extra cash for yourself, student organization, or the cause of your choice. Table slots are free with a $3 recommended donation to Mapleton Daze. Please reserve your slot early as the first 25 to register will receive the best downtown slots. For more information or to reserve/register your slot, contact Suzanne Morton at 764-4256, e-mail suzanne.libby@maine.edu or message any member of the Committee through the Facebook Mapleton Daze website.

Scouts end year with ceremony

Mapleton Brownie Girl Scout Troop 1133 ended the 2010-11 Scouting year with an awards and bridging ceremony June 17. Scouts and their families gathered at the covered picnic area near the gazebo on Main Street Friday evening. The two second-year Brownies, Katelyn Amero and Rebecca Rider, helped plan the ceremony as one of their requirements to bridge to Juniors, their next level of Scouting.
After the Scouts were introduced by Amero and Rider, they all recited the Girl Scout Promise and saluted the American flag. Rider led the girls in the song of her choosing, “Alice Camel,” then read her self-composed poem about being a Girl Scout. In her rhyming poem, she stated, “A Girl Scout is a girl that shares, a Girl Scout is a girl that cares.”
Awards earned by the girls from March through early June were presented by leaders Jennifer Buzza and Nancy Winslow. The girls had worked very hard since March to earn a total of 80 Brownie Try-Its. Scout Jenna Mountain and her mother, Debbie Olah, were honored with Girl Scout Council of Maine’s Family Star patch. Jenna’s parents were thanked for their many donations of pizza to the troop during various activities throughout the year. Jenna’s father, Dennis Mountain, accepted the award in Debbie’s absence.
Following the awards ceremony, Katelyn Amero read her self-composed poem about being a Girl Scout. In her poem, she stated, “When you look at every Girl Scout’s face, know that each of us help to make the world a better place.” She then led her fellow troop members in her song choice, “The Littlest Worm.”
Before the bridging ceremony began, the leaders presented each of the girls with a “Girl Scout” hat for all their hard work and dedication to the troop during the course of the year. All the leaders took part in the bridging ceremony, including Laurie Amero, who will be the Junior Leader in the fall. Katelyn and Rebecca each took an opportunity to share what they enjoyed most about being a Brownie before the entire troop sang “The Brownie Smile Song” one last time together as Brownies.
The bridging Brownies were presented with their Brownie wings by Mrs. Amero before all three walked across the bridge at the picnic area, symbolizing “bridging” from one level of Scouting to the next. On the other side of the bridge, Mrs. Amero pinned each new Junior with her Girl Scout pin. When the three returned to the ceremony, a poem titled “My Scout Pin” was read by leader Jennifer Buzza, and then the entire troop sang the final song, “Make New Friends.”
Bridging Brownies Katelyn Amero and Rebecca Rider gave flower bouquets to their mothers, Laurie Amero and Angela Rider, thanking them for their dedication to the troop and supporting them through their years in Girl Scouting. Leader Nancy Winslow presented each of the girls with a commemorative DVD of pictures from all the activities and meetings the troop took part in during the year.
Family and friends were invited to enjoy brownie ice cream sundaes at the conclusion of the ceremony.
Among the patches and Brownie Try-It’s the girls earned as a troop since March included cookie participation patch and number bars, roller skating, Historically Speaking USA, Memorial Day parade, Community Service, Brownie Membership Stars and Try-Its for Numbers and Shapes, Wave the Flag, People Are Talking, Caring and Sharing, Puppets, Plays and Dolls, and My Body. Thirty of the Try-Its were earned by several troop members at home.
Brownie Troop 1133 members are Delaney Alward, Katelyn Amero, Bethany Baker, Madelyn Buzza, Alexis Getchell, Alexus LaFerriere, Jenna Mountain, Rebecca Rider, Sydney Robichaud and Amanda Winslow. The Brownie Troop is led by Jennifer Buzza and Nancy Winslow.
