The Ashland Rotary Club will be hosting a night of laughter and entertainment with featured guest, Maine humorist Tim Sample.
Sample, who is a nationally recognized storyteller, spins yarns about Maine, its people and goings-on. With his legendary downeast accent, he leaves his audience, especially those from Maine, amused and laughing with the funny tales of life in the Pine Tree State. TIM SAMPLE will be appearing at the Ashland District School Saturday, May 21 at 7 p.m. The Ashland Rotary Club will be hosting the fund-raising event with the proceeds being used toward the purchase of an air conditioning unit for the Northwood Manor, a local non-profit residential care facility housing elderly adults.
The Ashland Rotary Club generously supports many local charities and organizations by hosting fundraisers in their honor. All proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit Northwood Manor toward the purchase of an air conditioning unit for the facility. Northwood Manor is a non-profit residential care facility located in Ashland which provides a home and 24 hour/7 day a week care and services to elderly adults. It is the only facility of its kind in the vicinity allowing the residents, most of whom are from the general area, to remain close to friends and family and their hometown communities.
Due to state regulations, the residents are not allowed to have (window) air conditioning units in their bedrooms, and being a non-profit, the organization has not been able to afford the costs associated with purchasing a unit that can efficiently cool the building.
“Being a non-profit organization, the operating costs to maintain the facility override all other necessities. Like everyone else, we have had to make spending cuts within our budget and we just don’t have the means available to afford an air conditioning unit though it is a fundamental need,” said Ella Weeks, Northwood Manor board treasurer. “We really appreciate the generosity of the Rotarians for taking this on as a project. Having a cooling system will no doubt help the residents maintain a comfortable living environment in our increasingly warmer summers.”
The event is open to the public and will take place Saturday, May 21 in the Ashland District School auditorium beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. There is limited seating available. Tickets can be purchased at the Ashland Food Mart, the Aroostook Centre Mall, Goin’ Postal in Presque Isle and from any Ashland Rotary Club member. This is a big deal for Ashland and sure to be a really fun night! Please come out to support the residents of Northwood Manor and the Ashland Rotary Club.

ASHLAND CUB AND BOY SCOUTS from Troop 179 recently participated in a dual “Arrow of Light” and “Cross Over” ceremony. The “Cross Over” ceremony is the time when a Cub Scout “graduates” or “crosses over” in to the rank of Boy Scout, while the “Arrow of Light, which is the highest honor a Cub Scout can receive, serves as a link between the Cub and Boy Scout programs. Pictured are, from left, front row: Mason Moro, Wyatt Carr, Otis Nelson and Airin Harmon. Back row: Malcolm Milligan, Chandler Pratt, Daniel Rafford, Steve Bellanceau, Garrett Graham and Zachary Carr. Receiving “Arrow of Light” certificates were Moro, Nelson and Rafford.
On March 18, the Ashland Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troop 179 leaders held a combined “Arrow of Light” and “Cross Over” ceremony for five of their Webelo II troop members. The time-honored ceremonies were held to honor each boy and their commitment and dedication to Scouting. The “Cross Over” ceremony is the time when a Cub Scout “graduates” or “crosses over” in to the rank of Boy Scout.

THE ASHLAND TIGER SCOUT TROOP 179 made edible egg nests for Easter and planted flowers in celebration of Earth Day while enjoying the story “All the World” by Liz Scanton, read by Terry Lynn Driscoll. Scouts include, from left, front row: Dakota Sutherland, Blayne Boutot, Lukas Deabay and Caleb Cray. Back row: Clark Condon, Dane Driscoll and Alex White.
Prior to the cross over, three of the Webelo II members — Otis Nelson, Mason Moro and Daniel Rafford — received the highest honor in the Cub Scouts, the “Arrow of Light.” Serving as a link between the Cub and Boy Scout programs, the “Arrow of Light” is the only Cub Scout badge that is allowed to be worn on the Boy Scout uniform. The “Arrow of Light” badge features an arrow and seven rays of light from the sun. The arrow points the way toward the new adventures that each Scout will have in Boy Scouting and each ray of light from the sun represents a great virtue — wisdom, courage, self control, justice, faith, hope and love.
Taking part in the dual ceremony were Boy Scouts Wyatt Carr (Tenderfoot), Airin Harmon (2nd Class), Garrett Graham (1st Class), and Malcolm Milligan (Senior Patrol Leader and Life Scout). Congratulations boys!

PIZZA PARTY — Kindergarten students in Kim Haines’ class recently made their own pizzas for lunch as a class project. Participating in this fun event were, from left, front row: Tripp Resses, Richie Micciche, Egan Beaulier and Abigail Cote. Back row: Lucinda Jacobs, Noah Door, Haines and Darby Clark.
Students in Kim Haines’ kindergarten class recently read “A Time For Kids” newsletter titled “What’s Cooking” and decided they would like to make their own pizzas for lunch. The students watched as Mrs. Haines made the pizza dough. They talked about yeast and the job it does to make dough rise. Nan Belskis, the lunchroom director, provided them with the sauce, cheese, pepperoni and some yummy green peppers. The students put some black olives and mushrooms on their pizzas. Each student was able to make their own pizza the way that he/she liked them. They were then taken to the cafeteria and the ladies in the kitchen cooked them. They all enjoyed their pizza creations for lunch.
