Mill Pond renewal continues
WASHBURN NEWS
by Tomi Henderson
Washburn’s Mill Pond area has been a place of history for the community since the town’s early beginning.
Serving as a mill and holding area for logs, as a water source for former business, and as a recreational area until the mid-1980s, this is a location most towns would consider blessed to have. Presently, efforts are under way to revitalize this location.
The Washburn Municipal Officers and Rotary Club are taking on the role of coordinating the efforts for future use and should be commended for their efforts to re-use this natural resource. The Rotary organization has been a remarkable force over the years in aiding in community affairs for local citizens via the work they do.
This summer, playground equipment will be constructed and installed at the Mill Pond. A canopy area with a barbeque pit is also in the planning stage.
On May 26, at 6:30 p.m., there will be a Washburn Town Meeting to determine if the residents will approve grants and other possible funding sources for the further development of the Mill Pond area. Hopefully, a good public turnout will happen and consideration will be positive for long-term planning leading to the completion and development of this area, making it a focal point in the community once again.
Whether skating, swimming, canoeing, serving as a training area for firemen, ATV and snowmobile trails, walking and hiking trails, fishing, or just as an area for the family to spend a few hours together, the Mill Pond area has been a place of memories for many generations and can now be developed even better to serve the generations of the future.
Please support your councilmen, the local Rotary Club and the Mill Pond Committee in the ongoing efforts to create a truly special place for the people of Washburn and surrounding communities. Please contact the Town Office if you are willing to share some volunteer skills and/or give monetary gifts towards the project.
It is important for folks to attend the upcoming town meeting to ask questions, become informed and hopefully give your support to a very worthwhile project. Keep informed of progress on Facebook at the Mill Pond site page. This informational notice is from Committee Member Doug Flanagin.

On May 4, the Destination Imagination team members and advisors provided a wonderful turkey dinner with “all the fixin’s” for the weekly dinner meeting of the Rotary Club of Washburn. In turn, the Rotary Club made a donation toward the team’s current fund-raising effort, which will allow the team to compete in the upcoming Global DI competition. The competition will be held May 24-29 in Tennessee. The team has been working nonstop to earn the thousands of dollars it will cost to travel and compete in the competition.

May fundraisers include a breakfast at the Trailrunners Clubhouse on the 21st from 6:30-9 a.m., with a car wash to follow at White’s garage. The team is also still taking orders for baked goods. Contact Tracy Reed to ordering baked goods.
