Mother-daughter banquet planned in Mapleton

MAPLETON NEWS

by Jennifer Buzza

There will be a mother-daughter banquet Friday, May 13 at 6 p.m. at the Mapleton Methodist Church.

The meal will be potluck, with desserts provided by the United Methodist Women. Local entertainment will be provided during the evening. The UMW will also be hosting a baby shower to benefit the Pregnancy Care Center in Presque Isle. Guests are asked to bring unwrapped baby items to assist the center with their ongoing needs.

Mapleton Lions Club supper and auction

This Saturday, May 7, the 49th annual Mapleton Lions Club auction will be held. The auction will start at 6 p.m. The auction, as in the past, will be held at the Mapleton Lions Hall. There are hundreds of donated items and services that will be auctioned that evening. This annual event is the major fundraiser for the charities supported by the Lions Club. We invite everyone to attend the auction which will follow a public ham and bean supper at the Mapleton Lions Hall. Dinner starts at 4:30 p.m. and the auction will begin at 6 p.m.

Some of the club’s proceeds from the supper and auction will support local organizations including Project Graduation, Aroostook Teen Leadership Camp, Mapleton Boy and Cub Scouts and the Mapleton Recreation Department. Each year, the club hangs the Christmas lights along Main Street and the club bears the expense of the electricity used to keep the lights on. The club conducts the annual Memorial Remembrance Day Ceremony for our Mapleton, Chapman and Castle Hill veterans at the Mapleton Elementary School following the club’s annual Memorial Day parade.

Lions also help individuals with little income to purchase eyeglasses. In the 1920s, Helen Keller asked Lions Club International to become the “Knights for the Blind.” Mapleton Lions continue in this tradition by collecting used eyeglasses that are recycled for Third World countries.

The Mapleton Lions Club auction is first of its two major fund-raising projects for these purposes. In June, the Mapleton Lions Club will host the Lions Club annual chicken barbeque as the kick-off event of Mapleton Daze which the club sponsors. The club also sponsors the Maple Meadow Farm Festival that will take place the same weekend as Mapleton Daze.

All of these events are made possible by the generous support of our neighbors and businesses in the central Aroostook area. The public is encouraged to attend one or both of these events. We look forward to seeing everyone there.

His treatments will consist of daily trips to The Aroostook Medical Center along with visiting nurses for several weeks.

This special dinner will be held at the Mapleton Lions Cub Hall Saturday, May 21. Dinner will be served from 4:30-7 p.m. Donations for the dinner will be accepted from those attending with all donations going to Murrey and his family.
