Dorothy W. Drew passed away peacefully at Rowan Court in Barre, VT, after a period of declining health, five days from her 89th birthday. She was born in Ashland, April 25, 1922, to the late Percy & Verna (Kneeland) Winslow.
She moved to Presque Isle in her early years, where she was blessed with her sister, Marilyn’s arrival in 1932. Dorothy attended PI schools and graduated from PI high school in 1939. She went on to study library science at Bates College, where she graduated in 1943, and later graduated from Simmons in 1945. She then joined the USAF and was instrumental in starting the first library at the PI Air Force base. Dorothy also was the head of the Presque Isle library from 1946 – 1948. On October 16, 1948, she married Robert C. Drew, who predeceased her in September 1988. She resigned from the base in 1956, to begin her family. They moved to Bangor in 1959, where she resided on Silver Road for over 40 years. There, she made many lasting friendships. Dorothy was a member of All Souls Congregational Church for many years, the Athena Club, Friends of the Bangor Public Library and the number one fan of the Bangor Daily News bowling team. She loved cats, book sales and ice cream. Dorothy loved spending time at Shin Pond with her extended family. She also spent many wonderful summer vacations on Prince Edward Island.
Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Marilyn Dean in 2008; and her brother-in-law, Perley Dean in 2007.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan Heim, son-in-law, Douglas, grandson Joseph, and great-grandchildren, Zaccari & Kailey, all of VT. She also leaves a niece, Deborah Coito; two nephews: William Dean and John Dean and families, all of Maine; and several cousins.
Calling hours will be held at Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, Presque Isle. Interment will be at Fairmount Cemetery immediately after. Contributions in her memory may be made to Turner Memorial Library, 39 Second St., Presque Isle.
