Blue or orange?

To the editor:

So, Fellow Citizens, how do you like the new curbside recycling program initiated by our fair city? It’s fun, isn’t it. I don’t know about you, but I’ve had more blue bags left by the collectors than I have had picked up.

I keep studying the guidelines that the solid waste department distributed, but there they are … blue bags still at the curb. There are so many loopholes with the guidelines, and so many throw-away items that “fall through the cracks” that most of us are getting weary of the bother imposed upon us. I waited at the curb last week to talk with the collectors, and they’re almost as confused and frustrated as we are, getting the devil from both patrons and the recycling center as well.

Now that we’ve experimented with the new system for a few weeks, I feel that the guidelines need to be updated and the list to include more everyday items that many of us are wondering about (toothpaste tubes and other unusual packaging items for example). The guidelines state “Discard caps and neck rings.” Discard where? Blue or orange? Most of us don’t even know what #2 HDPE containers are. Where do we dispose of butter and other wide-mouth containers?

I don’t know about you, but some of us need a little help out here with what should have been a simple job of recycling and preparation for collecting.
