GERRR … Pay As You Throw:
What you need to know!
To the editor:
GERRR means Get Educated – Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. I think the pay as you throw plan is a great idea. It has already started to make people aware of the importance of recycling.
People seem to be confused about what is and what isn’t recyclable. The Presque Isle Recycling Center isn’t able to recycle no. 4 and no. 5 plastics, but on the other hand, they are able to recycle no. 1 and no. 2 plastics. They have a display set up with two tables that show what is and what isn’t recyclable in greater detail. If you don’t’ know if something is recyclable, just remember – if it is a “Jug with a Neck and a 1 or a 2 – It’s Recyclable!”
Another thought I had was that some companies are making biodegradable or recyclable packaging, and I think that everyone should support this. There have been some complaints, however, about noisy biodegradable chip bags. I did a test, and I don’t see a difference in the bags, and if there is one, it’s a small sacrifice to save the environment.
It’s amazing how many things are recyclable, and most people just throw them away and say, “I don’t use that much anyway.” Every little bit adds up. Think about it this way: now they come and pick up the trash for you; you no longer have to haul it yourself. This saves time, money, and effort. Also, you save money by recycling because you don’t have to pay to get rid of stuff if you recycle it.
Recycling is a win-win situation. You win because you don’t have to pay to get rid of your trash, and the environment wins because there is less garbage going into the landfills.
My conclusion is that you should recycle and support companies that make recyclable or biodegradable products.
