Rotary Club

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday morning, April 5, at 6:30 at the Aroostook Health Center. A special guest was Claudia Stevens of the Presque Isle Area Chamber of Commerce and director of the United Way of Aroostook.

The special speaker was Rick Williams, manager of customer service at Maine Public Service. He is also involved with the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Aroostook County. This year’s event is the third one for the area and will take place from 6 p.m. on June 3 to 10 a.m. on June 4 at the Caribou High School.

The amount of teams participating has grown each year — in 2008 there were 13 teams raising $26,000; in 2009 there were 26 teams raising $44,000; and in 2010 there were 66 teams raising $147,000. The funds are used mainly for cancer research.

Each team can have up to 15 members. Once the relay is under way, at least one team member will be walking around the track at all times. Tents are typically set up by each team as a place to gather for rest and refreshment. Other tents are set up by groups to raise funds by offering services — from face painting to specialty foods to crazy hair. This is a true family event, with games and activities planned for children. There is also usually a band playing, with different area bands taking part.

Each hour during the relay, there will be a special theme for those that want to take part in crazy hat, formal wear, Zumba, noisemakers, backward and other trips around the track. There has even been a hula-hoop hour for those that can manage to keep a hoop going while walking!

Individuals interested in supporting this cause can either sponsor a team or individual and companies can become a corporate sponsor. In the past, sponsors have provided a barbecue for all interested participants at 5 p.m. on Friday before the start of the relay. Breakfast is also provided for those that are interested on Saturday morning.

For more information, contact Rick Williams at 760-2340, e-mail mrwilliams@mainepublicservice.com or check out www.relayforlife.org/aroostookme.

There will be a bottle drive for the Walter T.A. Hansen Memorial Library during the month of April. You can also drop off bagged bottles during regular library hours: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 1:30 to 5:30 p.m.; Wednesday, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.; or Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon.
