Program to aid caregivers starts Monday
Savvy Caregiver is a six-session training program for caregivers of people with dementia.
Often, family members assume the role of care giving unprepared and untrained. The course is intended to provide caregivers with an understanding of their role, knowledge of dementia and its impact, with skills to provide support and structure that address the losses of dementia.
Strategies learned will lead to an attitude that fosters confidence and a sense of mastery to create and maintain contented involvement for successful care giving.
Starting on Monday, April 18, between 6 and 8:30 p.m., a workshop will be offered at 33 Davis St., Presque Isle.
Sessions run for six weeks consecutively, once a week.
Each session includes training and discussion, and caregivers are given reading and assignments to complete between classes.
Participation in this training will include participation in a research project to evaluate the program by completing pre- and post-surveys. There is no charge. Participants should plan to attend all six classes and pre-registration is recommended.
The project is sponsored by the Office of Elder Services (OES) — Department of Health and Human Services, with funding from the U.S. Administration on Aging.
Training is arranged and provided by Area Agencies on Aging and the Alzheimer’s Association.
