Jamboree planned for Ashland man

ASHLAND NEWS

by Susan Feeney Hopkins

There will be an “Old Time Jamboree” held at the Ashland VFW starting at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 30 to benefit Dean and Kim Rafford of Ashland.

Dean had recently undergone cancer treatment, and I am happy to report is now in remission. The family could still benefit from some financial support, so come on out to the VFW for some foot-stomping fun. The Aroostook County Bluegrass group and Chet Rafford and Friends will be treating the guests to their awesome pickin’. Guests are welcome to bring along their own instruments to join in the jam.

There will be a spaghetti dinner served from 2-4 p.m. There is also going to be a “raffle table.” The benefit organizers are accepting donated items to be raffled off. Admission for the benefit will be by donation at the door. For more information or to arrange a donation of an item for the raffle, please contact Jean Rafford at 764-1981.

Benefit to aid cancer patient

A benefit supper is being planned to benefit a local woman and her family.

The dinner for Brenda and Greg Pinette is scheduled for Saturday, April 16, at the Ashland VFW Hall, located on Route 11. The meal will include spaghetti and all the fixings, with an auction and dance to follow. The event begins at 5 p.m. and will continue until 10 p.m.

Brenda Pinette is currently undergoing chemotherapy for liver cancer while trying to raise her two grandsons whose mother died of cancer in September 2010.

Donations are greatly appreciated. For more information, contact Tammy at 227-4159 or 435-2013 or Wanda at 551-2044.

Portage Lake Girl Scout Troop

Portage Lake is shaping up to form a local Girl Scout Troop, but they need your help! They are looking for individuals to serve as troop leaders and volunteers who are interested in helping to guide and shape the lives of our young ladies building their self-esteem, confidence and leadership abilities.

The Girl Scouts of America is a long-standing organization which has helped to positively influence the lives of many girls and women around the world. What a great resource to have in town for our girls!

This is a significant opportunity to be a positive role model helping young girls develop to their full potential and character while adding meaning to their lives. All the while doing the same for your own.

There will be training for leaders and volunteers May 4. Come on out to see how you can be involved. For more information, please contact Jaymie St. Peter at 435-2307 or 272-9332.
