Ashland’s fifth-grade students
Junior hunting day
By Tiffany Libby
Grade 6 – Ashland District School
This year is my first Junior Hunting Day. It’s only 4:00 in the morning and I’m tired, but I can’t wait; today I’m going to hopefully shoot a deer.

I am turning eleven this year, so I can finally junior hunt. So I went downstairs to get ready, I got on my hunting clothes, my orange hunting vest, my boots, and my orange hat. I put my deer call and my blunt call in my vest pocket. I also put my bullets, and mint flavored gum in there, too. Then I grabbed my 2-23, and started to go outside to my truck. My parents thought I looked funny, so they made me pose for a picture on her camera. The best thing about Junior Hunting Day is all the kids get to hunt, and the grown-ups have to watch. After they took the picture, Doug and I went outside to the truck. Then we got in and Doug turned on the heat. I turned the heater towards me and I felt the warm air on my face. Then we were out to the fields.

ASHLAND AD MEN —
Working on their Newspapers In Education assignment are Drew Condon, left, and Daniel Rafford, students in Mrs. Beaulier’s fifth-grade class at Ashland District School.
We were there until around 7:00 A.M. Then we went to back home to wait for night. I was watching TV then I noticed it was already 6:00 P.M. I told Doug we should head out and we did. We got into the truck once more. Then we headed to a place by a potato field to look for deer to hunt. We had to get out of the truck because the terrain was too tough for the truck. On the way there I heard a rustle in the leaves. I looked. There was nothing there; it was just the wind. Then I took a step forward, and almost stepped in a big pile of bear poo. Then I kept walking. Doug was following me. Then we got into a clearing, and I heard a chipmunk scream. I looked over, and sure enough, I saw a little baby chipmunk sitting on a log.

He had a little black strip going down the center of his back, up to his head, and all the way down to the tip of his tail. The rest of his body was a light brown color. I thought he was really cute because he was kind of on the chubbier side!

Then I heard a twig snap in the woods far off to my left. It was a loud snap; that’s how I heard it. I looked over and it was a DEER! I couldn’t tell if it had any antlers or not, so I took my binoculars out of my vest to get a better look because it was so far away. It had … ONLY ONE ANTLER! On the one antler there were four points on it! It was a doe buck! It was a DUCK! I put my binoculars down, I aimed my gun, I shot and I missed. It walked away like nothing happened.
