PRESQUE ISLE — A new set of wheels for a local man suffering from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is the goal of a fundraiser slated for Friday, April 1, at the Crow’s Nest Restaurant and Events Center on Maysville St.
D.J. Murphy is a 20-year-old from Presque Isle who was diagnosed at the age of 5 with the life-altering condition. By age 10, he was confined to a wheelchair. Surgery on his back a few years ago, meant to help him, actually has led to various problems, including immobility. Metal rods in his back lengthened his body, making him too tall for the family’s van and thus making it difficult for him to get to regular medical appointments. Friday’s event will help him raise the funds necessary to purchase a van customized to meet his needs.
There are many things D.J. loves to do, including going out to the mall, but without a van he can fit in to travel, he’s basically homebound.
The event will have an April Fool’s theme; you never know what might happen. The event will run from 8 to 11 p.m., with admission $12 per person or $20 per couple. Come dance to the music of Sound Friendship. A 50/50 raffle will be held; you don’t have to be present to win.
Tickets may be purchased at the Crow’s Nest, Studio Looks on South Main Street or at the door. Donations may be made on Facebook, just search for “Benefit Dance for DJ Murphy.” Donations are also being accepted by mail and can be sent to: A Van for DJ, c/o Paul Willette, 22 Dupont Dr., Presque Isle, ME 04769.
