Ashland takes second in County rec event
FORT FAIRFIELD — The Caribou girls’ fifth- and sixth-grade basketball team won all three games to capture the Northern Maine Community Recreation Association County Tournament held March 18 and 19.
The Vikings recorded a 14-9 victory over Ashland in the title game. Madison Doucette scored five points and Meg Boone added four to lead the winners offensively, while Ashley Matlock and Danielle Hanson spearheaded the team on the defensive end of the floor.
Cassidy Pelletier had eight of the nine points for Ashland.
In semifinal play, Caribou topped Fort Fairfield, 13-5, while Ashland tripped up Washburn, 29-14. Pelletier again was the big scorer for the Hornets in leading her team to victory. She ended up with a total of 30 points in her team’s wins over Washburn and St. Agatha (a 26-11 triumph) in the quarterfinals.
In other quarterfinal match-ups, Fort Fairfield handled Mars Hill, 11-7; Washburn bested Presque Isle, 24-13; and Caribou downed Easton, 20-10.
In consolation games, Easton stopped Mars Hill, 18-14, while Presque Isle eased past St. Agatha, 27-11.
Notable individual performances in the tourney included Tori Koch’s 24 points in her two games for Washburn and Kayla Saucier’s 16 points in a pair of games for Presque Isle.
