The Aroostook Cup racing series comes to a close Saturday, March 12 with the Himie Towle Memorial X-C Ski Frolic at the Nordic Heritage Center in Presque Isle.

The mass-start event is freestyle cross country, but a classic track is also available. Snowshoe enthusiasts are encouraged to tour the snowshoe trails.

First- and second-place awards will be presented in 22 racing categories, with special awards going to the overall female and male winners in the 7.5-kilometer race.

Proceeds will benefit Nordic Heritage Sport Club youth programs. The registration fee is $20 for a family, $10 for adults and $5 for youths, with lunch served afterwards. The first 75 to register will receive giveaway items.

Registration will be held from 9:30-11:30 a.m. A 200-meter race for ages 8 and under begins at 11:30 a.m., a 500-meter race for 9- and 10-year-olds will begin at 11:35 a.m., a one-kilometer race for 11- and 12-year-olds begins at 11:45 a.m. and the 7.5-kilometer feature race begins at noon.

The event is co-sponsored by Cary Medical Center and the Nordic Heritage Sport Club.

Five Aroostook Cup races have taken place so far this winter and 10th Mountain Ski Center holds the top spot with 67 points, while NHSC is second with 62 and Snowy Mountain third with 55.
