Fort Kent hosts two ski meets

FORT KENT — The Warriors hosted both a classical cross country meet and both slalom and giant slalom alpine races this past week.
On Thursday, at Lonesome Pine Trails, the Caribou boys and girls swept the Nordic competitions.
Caribou’s boys team scored 11 points to easily defeat Fort Kent (41), Presque Isle (58), Madawaska (60) and Fort Fairfield (no score).
Christian Sleeper of the Vikings had the winning time of 18 minutes, 27 seconds. Teammates Caleb Chapman (18:39) and D.J. Flynn (18:59) followed, while Fort Kent’s Logan Doak (19:51) was fourth and Viking freshman Ryan Washington (19:52) fifth.
Jesse Rochester of Presque Isle (20:31) placed seventh. Teammate Joel Shay was 15th in 22:57 and Fort Fairfield’s Nathan McLaughlin 19th in 23:15.
The Caribou girls also claimed the comfortable victory. The Vikings scored 13 points to finish ahead of Fort Kent (32), Fort Fairfield (57), Presque Isle (59) and Madawaska (no score).
Laura Collins of Caribou won by an eight-second margin over runner-up Vicky Bernard of Fort Kent. Collins’ time was 22:38, while Bernard came in at 22:46.
Melissa McKenney of Fort Fairfield was 12th in 25:52.
On Saturday, alpine skiers had their chance to hit the slopes at Lonesome Pine Trails.
In the boys’ slalom, Logan Brewer of Central Aroostook fashioned the best time at 1:28.74 for his two runs. He was just 3/100ths of a second faster than Fort Kent’s Ted Martin.
Spencer Stetson of CA was fourth at 1:31.07, Fort Fairfield’s McLaughlin was fifth at 1:33 and Kaine Kingsbury, also of CA, was eighth at 1:36.38.
Kyle MacCallum was Presque Isle’s fastest slalom skier, placing 17th in 1:47.61.
Fort Kent’s Doak won the G.S. in 1:37.58. Brewer took second in 1:43.63, Stetson fourth in 1:44.56 and McLaughlin fifth in 1:45.27.
Gabe Player of Presque Isle had his team’s best time at 1:54.1, good for 18th overall.
In the girls’ competition, Fort Kent’s Roxy Pelletier swept both the slalom and G.S. races. She was on the slalom in 1:34.29 and the G.S. in 1:45.37.
For the slalom, Presque Isle’s Emma Bartlett was fifth at 1:46.59. The Wildcats’ Jolanna Gough (20th, 2:00.41).
In the G.S., Bartlett again was fifth in 1:50.32.
