The Presque Isle trio of Quinn Graves, Tyler Michaud, and Dylan Michaud will take to the slopes to compete in the U.S. National Toboggan Championships Feb. 11-13 at the Camden Snow Bowl. These championships have been held every February for the past 20 years and feature teams from all around the nation competing for the best time and the honor of being crowned a “National Champion.”
“It should be an amazing experience to get out there and toboggan against some of the best in the nation,” said Quinn Graves. “We will represent our town to the best of our ability and hopefully our practice and hard work will win us a championship.”
The three-man team, known as the “Dragon Sleigh-ers,” will be competing on an American Traders toboggan purchased at local shop Ben’s Trading Post. Graves mentioned that the sled should provide them with the power and speed they need to earn a spot in the top 30, which would advance the team into the finals.
Toboggans in the race typically reach speeds of 40 to 50 miles-per-hour while they travel down an ice chute originally built in the 1930s. The run ends on frozen Hosmers Pond, and depending on the ice conditions can go up to quarter- of-a mile.
“Will it be scary? Of course.” Graves said. “Will it be worth it? I’ll let you know when we finish.”
