Who would have thought that the 2007 season could be more unpredictable? Well, athletes, coaches and fans woke up to freshly fallen snow earlier this week. After the snow melted, the county teams were left with cold weather and rain to contend with. Although some games had to be postponed, the rest of the area teams found themselves a little chilly, a little wet, but playing with a lot of heart this week.
Tuesday, May 15
Washburn District High School’s varsity softball team played against Wisdom in St. Agatha. The Lady Beavers could not get past Wisdom’s strong pitcher and lost the game 20-1. Kelsee McLaughlin had a single and one RBI in the third inning.
The Central Aroostook baseball team took on Southern Aroostook at home, but lost the game 15-7. Logan McCarthy had three singles and Cameron York had an RBI and singled twice.
The Lady Panthers also had a doubleheader against Greater Houlton Christian Academy and split the wins; with Central Aroostook winning the first at 11-8 and losing the second, 3-22.
In the first game, Latisha Neece had three singles and two RBIs; Sarah Long had two singles and one RBI; and Alex Dame had an RBI single. Robin Graham had an RBI double in the second game against GHCA.
Both the Ashland baseball and softball teams traveled to play Van Buren. While the boys took the 16-12 win, the girls lost their game 8-6.
For the boys, Kevin Baker had two home runs, doubled and singled with six RBIs to help lead Ashland to the victory. Nick Gimbel contributed two singles and a double, and brought in two runners, while Tyler Cote had two singles.
On the girls side, Whitney Flint tied up the game in the fifth inning with a two-run home run and also had a single. Amber Mayo had a triple and a single and Jessica Landry had two singles.
Thursday, May 17
Fort Fairfield’s Lady Tigers traveled to Van Buren, but after a hard fight, lost the five-inning game 14-1.
Presque Isle hosted games against Houlton under the lights, with the PI girls winning their game 11-0 and the boys losing 12-1.
The Lady Wildcats were lead by Heather Fowler with two singles, a triple and three RBIs. Allison Donovan had one single and two RBIs; Emily Curry had two singles and a double. Krista Coffin also singled twice for PI.
Ashland District High School hosted varsity softball and baseball games at home against the Washburn Beavers. The teams split the wins, with Ashland’s baseball team taking the win at 17-1, and Washburn slid by with a 9-6 win.
For the boys, Kevin Baker had three singles and two runners batted in for the Hornets. Henry Mulligan had four runs driven in on two singles and also scored two runs himself; Justin Belanger had two singles and three runners batted in. Tyler Cote had three singles and crossed home twice, while Tony Baker tripled with two RBIs. Adam Thompson had two singles and one run for Ashland.
Nolan Gagnon, of Washburn, had one RBI.
The game was close for the Lady Beavers and Lady Hornets. Washburn player Rachel Palmer had a two-run home run and Amber Palmer had three singles and four RBIs to secure the victory for their team. Kelsee McLaughlin also doubled and singled.
On the Hornet’s side, Whitney Flint also had a two-run homer and pitched 10 strikeouts in the game. Mindy Chasse had a double and brought in one runner, while Macey Pelkey had a triple and two singles.
Fort Fairfield traveled to Van Buren for a softball game, but couldn’t make it by for the win, and Fort lost the game 14-1.
Saturday, May 19
Once again, the teams in Aroostook County found themselves battling cold and wet weather, but the Fort Fairfield baseball team traveled to Limestone nonetheless, and returned home after winning the game. Fort Fairfield dominated the LCS/MSSM team with a final score of 13-1.
Austin Dufour, of Fort Fairfield, had three doubles and six RBIs; Jake Kenneson allowed only one run on five hits for six innings from the mound. Cody Closson had a double and a single, bringing in two batters; Brian Andrews had two singles and two RBIs, while Ian Towle singled twice. The Fort softball team also played against Ashland, but Ashland came out on top at 7-0.
Monday, May 21
Monday was a big game day, with many of the area teams playing games that had to be rescheduled due to weather.
Ashland’s softball and baseball teams traveled to Dyer Brook to take on Southern Aroostook. The boys teams pulled off a win at 2-1 and the girls lost 7-5 to the Lady Pioneers.
For the boys, Isaac Ward had one RBI single in the eighth inning to lead the Hornets into victory.
On the girls side, Andrea Mayo had a two-run home run and Macy Pelkey and Whitney Flint each contributed two singles for the Lady Hornets.
The Central Aroostook varsity baseball team traveled to Hodgdon and took the 13-5 win. Sam Clockedile had a two-run homer, a single and two RBIs; Cameron York had a single and a double with three RBIs; and Logan McCarthy singled twice.
The Lady Panthers met up with Hodgdon High School and held tight to a tie until a fourth inning 10-run break by the Lady Hawks. Central Aroostook fought hard to pull ahead, but lost the game 22-10. Sarah Long had two singles and two RBIs while Kayla day also singled twice.
The LCS/MSSM baseball team hosted both boys and girls doubleheaders against the Washburn Beavers. In both games, Limestone was victorious.
For the boys, Washburn’s Justin Howe singled twice and Adam Thompson had one single and two RBIs.
In the second game, the Beavers’ Sebastian Viola had a single with one RBI and Ben Goupille also singled.
On the girls side, Kelsee McLaughlin and Amber Reed both had a single and one RBI for the Lady Beavers in the opener. In the second game, McLaughlin led the Beavers with a single, double and two runners batted in. Erica McDougall singled twice with two RBIs; and Rachel Palmer also contributed two singles and batter one runner in.
The Fort Fairfield Lady Tigers traveled to St. Agatha to take on Wisdom High School, but could not get past Wisdom’s all-star pitcher, losing the game 10-4. Chelsea York led the team with five hits.
