WESTFIELD — Mail destined for northern Aroostook County took a slight detour Saturday when the operator of the truck lost control on U.S. Route 1.

“At approximately 7 a.m. on Jan. 8 Trooper Dennis Quint and I responded to a report of a tractor trailer accident on Route 1 in Westfield. Ronald Kubanek, 72, of Argyle was northbound in his 2007 Freightliner tractor-trailer hauling a load of mail when he lost control on the snow- and ice-covered roadway,” said Sgt. Brian Harris, Maine State Police.

Harris said Kubanek skidded off the opposite side of the road, striking a telephone pole and shearing it off. Traffic had to be re-routed briefly while emergency personnel worked to clear the scene.

“Route 1 was shut down for approximately two hours while Brewer’s Wrecker Service, of Mars Hill, removed the truck and its trailer from the scene. Kubanek was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured,” said Harris.

The truck, owned by Krisway Truck Leasing of South Portland, was heavily damaged in the accident and was considered a total loss.

Assisting at the scene were members of the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department, Crown Ambulance and the Mars Hill Fire Department.
