Grades 3-4 basketball

In the final month of play for the grades 3-4 ballers, North Carolina and Syracuse kicked off the final run.  Will Bridges controlled the tempo and led the game with six points in the contest. Also for Carolina, Connor Albertson and Sam Beaulieu both added baskets. As for Syracuse, Cole Paterson had the team’s only points, scoring four in the contest.  North Carolina won 10-4.

The second game of the day featured Arizona taking on Georgetown. Arizona’s Jason Dumais led the way with 12 points, followed closely behind by Patrick Lessard with 10. Gavin Akeley, Jacob Sjoberg, Izack Sprowls and Mark Graves added baskets. On the other side of the hardwood, Georgetown’s Jacob Martin had 10 points, with Carter Rice adding a foul shot. Arizona won 28-11.

On Monday, the Black Bears took on the Fighting Irish. The Black Bears’ Savannah Rodriguez was again the game pace car, controlling the action and scoring eight points in the contest. Anna Robinson added four points. As for the Irish, Rebecca Rider and Molly Kingsbury led the way with four points each while Julia Good added a basket. The Black Bears remain undefeated by winning in overtime, 12-10.

In the second game of the day, the classic rivalry between Duke and North Carolina took place. Michael Berube had a game-high 12 points for Duke with Zech Morse adding six points to Duke’s total. On the other side of the court, North Carolina’s William Bridges had a team-high 10 points and Sam Beaulieu and Khyler Caron both added two points. Duke won the rivalry game, 18-14.

Tuesday’s games brought two great games. In the first one, Michigan and Syracuse hit the hardwood.  Michigan’s Erick Tompkins had a game-high 25 points, scoring 20 in the first half of play. Accompanying him was Caleb Wheaton with six points and Isaac Currier with four. On the other bench, Syracuse’s Andrew Hewitt had eight points with Jonah Hudson notching six and Riley Kinney five. Michigan was just too much, however, winning 35-19.

The late game proved to be an instant classic between North Carolina and Georgetown. The game turned into a seesaw battle all the way to the final buzzer. North Carolina’s scoring attack was led by William Bridges with eight, followed by Sam Beaulieu, Garrett Caron and Khyler Caron all scoring a basket and Chase Quirion added a foul shot. As for Georgetown, Jacob Martin continues to make a name for himself by scoring eight points with Carter Rice adding six points. North Carolina pulled off the victory 15-14.

In Wednesday’s matchups, the Huskies took on the Irish. The Huskies’ Libby Boone had three points with Claire Hopkins adding a hoop. For the Irish, Molly Kingsbury led the way with six points, followed by Rebecca Rider and Elizabeth Collins with two each. The Irish pulled of the close battle, 10-5.

The second game of the day featured the Black Bears and Terriers. Once again, the Black Bears’ Savannah Rodriguez had the game-high 14 points in the contest, while Taylor Hedrich had four points and Karla Williams and Anna Robinson two each. On the other side of the court, the Terriers’ Libby Moreau had four points and Belle Thibeault and Acacia Johnston chipped in with two points each. However, the Black Bears were just too much, winning 22-8.

Wintergreen Arts

The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department and Wintergreen Arts winter session registration has begun. The curren session runs through Feb. 18. In “The Wonderful World of Paint,” students will learn about the different styles and uses of watercolor and acrylics. In “Calling All Confectioners,”  students will learn how to make tasty creations out of clay, learn culinary terminology, recipe reading, ingredient measuring and artistic plating.

Adult volleyball

The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department is offering adult volleyball on Monday nights from 7-9 p.m. This program is informal and the cost is $1 per night. If interested, please contact the recreation center at 764-2545 or Tammy Lothrop at 227-0712.

Birthday parties at the pool and recreation center offered

The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department is hosting birthday parties for ages 4 and up at the recreation center, in addition to hosting parties at the indoor pool.

The recreation center is available Friday and Saturday nights from 6-8 p.m., with one hour of organized gym games included in the rental. Activities vary with age groups, but include wiffleball, soccer, basketball and kickball. For more information on rentals for the recreation center, call 764-2545 or email pirec@maine.rr.com.

Grades 5-6 basketball registration

The department will offering fifth and sixth grade basketball for both boys and girls. Registration is under way and the season begins Jan. 29. The registration fee for this program is $18 for Presque Isle residents.
