MARS HILL NEWS

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met Tuesday morning, Jan. 4, at 6:30 at the Aroostook Health Center. The special guests were the local cheerleaders that were invited to participate in an NCA/NDA performance at Disney World in December.

The local cheerleaders attended a summer camp and tried out for the chance to take part in the activities in Florida. Kyle Donahue, a senior at CAHS, was invited to take part in the stunt activities. junior Whitney Klein, sophomore Laken Kingsbury and freshman Alexis Bradbury were invited to take part in the dance activities.

These four plus their chaperones left Maine on Nov. 30 and returned Dec. 7. They learned their routine in one day while at Disney and performed as part of 500 cheerleaders from 36 states on Main Street at the Magic Kingdom.

They were also able to spend some time at the other parks and saw Mariah Carey and Ryan Seacrest.

On Dec. 18, Girl Scout Troop 1134 assembled and delivered gift bags of homemade biscuits, donated jelly from Smuckers and donated butter from Al’s to the residents of Mars Hill Manor and Hillside Manor apartments as a thank-you for being in our community. No money is accepted for the bags, just smiles, which the girls both gave and received. Pictured at left delivering a gift bag to a Manor resident, in the first row is Brownie Jordan Delong. In the second row, from left, are: Cadette Jessica Cropley and Brownies Mersaydez Johnston and Sara Stitham. Back row: resident Zella Coldwell and Brownie Madison Crouse.

Anatomy fundraisers

The CAHS anatomy class is planning a trip to Philadelphia in April to visit the Mutter Museum. There are eight students that plan to pursue a career in the medical field, and the museum features past medical marvels that shaped the treatments and medications offered today. In addition, the students hope to also see the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Liberty Bell Center, the National Constitution Center, Eastern State Penitentiary and Liberty 360 — a 3-D panoramic theater showcasing America’s historical journey.

The class will be holding several fundraisers to raise the money necessary for them to take the trip. They have a private donor who has pledged $1 for every $2 that the students raise.

Current fundraisers include tickets on a quarter side of beef, which will be available in mid-January. Tickets are six for $5. The beef is being donated by Donovan Family Farms and will be cut to the winners specifications by Garey’s Slaughter House.

Another is a “calendar” sale for the month of January. Tickets are $10 each. There are 22 chances to win cash as they will draw a ticket on 22 of the 31 days in January. There will be two $200 drawings, four $100 drawings and 16 $20 drawings.

Hot Shot Competition

So you think you’re a good shooter and you’re ready to test yourself against players your own age? Then this is the event for you!

The Maine Recreation and Parks Association (M.R.P.A.)/Red Claws Hot Shot Competition is a basketball skills competition for youth 9-18 years of age. It involves shooting from five “hot spots” marked on one end of the basketball court. This competition will test each contestant’s speed, shooting, dribbling and rebounding ability.

Each participant must first compete in a local Hot Shot event sponsored by your community recreation department (Mars Hill Rec Department). Division winners will advance to the Regional Competition. After the completion of all regional events, the winners and runners-up of each age division then advance to the M.R.P.A. Red Claws State Hot Shot Competition. Participants at the State Competition compete for first place and runner-up awards.

The final Mars Hill competition will be held from 1-3 p.m. at the Mars Hill and Blaine Community Center on Thursday, Jan. 13. For more information, contact Dave Collins at: marshillrec@hotmail.com.

Round robin

A grade 3-4 basketball round robin took place in Mars Hill on Thursday, Dec. 30, between three teams from Mars Hill, two teams from Easton and two teams from Limestone, with each team playing four games. A special thank-you goes to Mike McClung, Logan McLaughlin, Dan Brewer and Caleb Kelly for officiating the games.

Members of the 3rd and 4th Grade Chorus from Fort Street Elementary School performed their Christmas Concert on Thursday evening, Dec. 16, at CAHS. The group sang “Sixty Million Snowflakes,” “Bright Shining Star” and “Santa Surprise” before doing their trademark “wave” following their numbers.
