When making resolutions,
include your pets

Special to the Star-Herald
Well, we survived Christmas this year, and although donations were not as much as in years past, it was still wonderful that we got the much-needed things that we did get. One thing I hope you did, if you visited the shelter, was thank our dedicated employees. They work very hard to keep the kennel smelling fresh, keep the animals tended and help customers find the animal that best fits into their family.

So with the New Year right around the corner, we are looking ahead to the future. We hope the next year will be a kind one to us. We wish for less of a cat population — that owners understand the importance of altering their animals, both males and females.
We also hope to continue to spread the word about responsible pet ownership. If your group would like to visit the Central Aroostook Humane Society to learn more about our organization, please give us a call for an appointment and a grand tour of our facility. If your group would like a representative to visit and speak to your group, we are more than willing to do that as well. Maybe you own a daycare and would like someone to talk to the kids about dog bite prevention or responsible pet ownership; we can do that — Anything to help spread the word. It is all about working as a community.

SHELTER VISIT — The Sunday School at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Fort Fairfield has been collecting donations and supplies for the Central Aroostook Humane Society in Presque Isle. On Saturday, Dec. 11, they had fun dropping off all the goodies, playing with the kitties and even had a photo taken with Santa Paws. Pictured from left are: Bill and Aubrey Elmore, Olivia Langner, Kira Rogers, Daisy and Dixie Grady, and Beatrice Elmore.
Have you made your New Year’s resolutions? Here are some to consider:
• I resolve to have my pet examined by a veterinarian at least once a year;
• I resolve to discuss my pet’s vaccination needs with my veterinarian and make sure that it is adequately protected against infectious diseases;
• I resolve to feed my pet dog or cat a high-quality pet food;
• I resolve to take better care of my pet’s teeth (have you looked in there lately?);
• I resolve to groom my dog more frequently (grooming gives us a chance to sit, relax and to bond, not to mention possibly find any abnormalities on our pets’ bodies); and
• I resolve to spend more time with my pet. (Isn’t this why we have them?)

Heather and Kira Rogers joined other members of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Fort Fairfield for a visit to the Central Aroostook Humane Society in Presque Isle, with many gifts presented to help the shelter pets.
My dogs have made their own resolutions:
Zoe: I resolve to not hog the bed and the covers when sleeping with Mommy. I also resolve to allow cats on the bed when necessary.
Tucker: I resolve to try not to eat icky things that give me gas and stop chasing crows.
Rusty: I resolve to get off the bed faster in the morning before Dad sees me there.
Tommy: I resolve not to “shark” Rusty any more; we are both getting old, those games are so childish.
Taz: I resolve to not bounce four feet off the floor but only three feet when people come to visit.
Pugsley: I will never ever run away from home again!!!
If you are looking for a friend for life, please stop by the Central Aroostook Humane Society. We have many wonderful animals waiting for homes.
Happy New Year!!!
