Junior Engineering Program

to be held at UMPI

PRESQUE ISLE — The University of Maine at Presque Isle will be the site for the After School Junior Engineering Program which includes problem solving, Lego robotics and modular origami. The program will be held on Mondays from 3:15 to 5 p.m., beginning Jan. 24 and ending May 23, 2011.

The After School Junior Engineering Program is offered by the Maine Junior Engineering Technological Society. The goal of the program is to introduce students in grades 3 through 8 to math and science skills as those skills are used in civil engineering, computer engineering and architecture. The program is aimed at children who have an interest in problem solving, creativity and reasoning as applied in science and engineering.

During the program students design and build original robotic models, solve challenging problems and build modular origami constructions. Those activities help the students gain an understanding of the mathematical and related aspects of engineering science.

The Maine Junior Engineering Technological Society partners with other companies and organizations, including The Engineering Development Trust, the American Mathematics Competitions, Young Engineers and the American Origami Society, to sponsor the program.

Eva Szillery is the director of the Maine Junior Engineering Technological Society, the state director of the American Mathematics competitions, and the founder of the Maine Origami Society. Dr. Szillery is an expert on modular origami. Since 2004, she has presented workshops on modular origami and had several exhibits all over Maine. In 2010, she displayed her work at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.

The fee for the After School Engineering Program is $225 per student. There is a $15 discount for returning students, and scholarships are available. For more information or registration material, contact Szillery at 207-356-0207 or evaszillery-mmsets@me.acadia.net.
