3 girls teams start out strong

The winter sports season has begun anew as a flurry of games were played over the past four days. And based on the results of those opening games, it appears that a fine year of basketball awaits most Aroostook County girls basketball squads.
Presque Isle, Washburn and Easton have all looked sharp in their first two games, with each squad picking up a pair of wins. Coaches are reminded to submit their game results to the newspaper in a timely manner so they may be included in the weekly wrapup.
The following is a recap of games played through Monday, Dec. 13.
Washburn 54, Fort Fairfield 46 — At Washburn Monday, the Beavers (2-0) knocked off the defending State Class D champion Fort Fairfield Tigers thanks to a fourth quarter rally. Fort Fairfield (1-1) led 15-14 in the first quarter, but Washburn took a 29-23 lead at halftime. The two squads were knotted at 40-40 after three stanzas.
In that fateful final quarter, Washburn outscored the Tigers 14-6 for the win.
Rebecca Campbell sparked the Beavers with 26 points, while Carmen Bragg added 13; Sarah Sjoberg chipped in six; Maegan Fitzpatrick, four; Rayah Saucier, three and Nicole Olson, two.
For Fort Fairfield, Amanda Hotham tallied 21 points, followed by Brooke Beaulieu with 14; Sydney Churchill, seven; and Kacie York and Rebekah Pelkey, two each.
Central Aroostook 60, Southern Aroostook 40 — At Mars Hill (1-1) Monday, Panther Vicki McIntyre led all players with 28 points and 10 rebounds. Kristen Long chipped in 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Rachael Grew added eight points; Sara Grass, six; and Sarah Brewer and Paige Garrison, two each.
For Southern Aroostook (0-1), Jasmine Rockwell led the team with 16 points, including four 3-pointers. Shelby Harden added 12.
CAHS led 19-9, 34-13 and 46-22 at the quarter breaks.
Ashland 56, GHCA 27 — At the University of Maine at Presque Isle Monday, the Hornets (1-0) won their season opener with a strong outing against Greater Houlton Christian Academy. Brooke LaBelle netted 12 points, while Kayla Cote added 11; Rachel Gillis and Whitney Donovan, eight each; Adrianna Paradis, seven; Rylee Graham, four; and Chelsea Hammond, Tayra Saucier and Gabby Cyr, two each.
For GHCA (0-2), Lauren Bishop led the way with 10 points.
Ashland led 14-6, 34-12 and 48-19 at the quarter breaks.
Presque Isle 59, Mattanawcook Academy 49— At Presque Isle Monday, Kayla Richards’ 21 points lifted the Wildcats (2-0) to victory. Megan Ireland added 11, while Meredith Stewart chipped in seven points and 12 rebounds. Other Wildcat scorers were: Chelsea Nickerson and Karlee Bernier, each seven; and Chandler Guerrete, six.
For the Lynx (0-1), Rianne Gardner had 13 points and Taylor Blood added 12.
Presque Isle 69, Hermon 46 — At Hermon Saturday, Bernier led the Wildcats with 15 points, while Richards added 14 points, eight rebounds and five assists as Presque Isle won its season opener. Guerrette added 12 points, while Ireland chipped in 10.
“We built a lead in the second quarter and slowly pulled away,” said Wildcat coach Jeff Hudson.
Easton 49, East Grand 24 — At Easton Saturday, Carla Halvorson paced the Bears (2-0) with 16 points, while Sydney Trask chipped in 13 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and five assists. Other Easton scorers were: Mindy Desmond (10 points, 5 steals), Ariana Babineau, six points; and Brooke Hammond and Danielle Dudley, two each.
For East Grand (0-1), Elisha Farley had eight points, Kaitlyn Beaudoin, five; Jayne Cousins and Kim Armstrong, both four; and Shaunna Beaudoin, three.
The Bears led 7-4, 23-9 and 39-18 at the quarter breaks.
Easton 53, GHCA 16 — At Easton Friday, Trask led the Bears with 12 points, while Halvorson added 10; Katie Cyr, five; Mickaela Hathaway, Marissa Parlin and Dudley, four apiece; Babineau, three; Mariah Cyr, Hammond, Brooke Lunney and Desmond, two each; and Cassie Buck, one.
For GHCA, Lauren Bishop had seven points, Allison Little, five; and Halle Duff and Destinee Neurether, two each.
The Bears led 11-3, 30-5 and 41-11 at the quarter breaks.
Fort Fairfield 56, Limestone-MSSM 23 — At Limestone Saturday, Beaulieu and Hotham both scored 14 points to lead the Tigers. Also scoring for the Tigers were: Logan Bubar, Lindsay Blaisdell, Whitney McNamee, each with four; Janae Libby, three; York, Nicole Giberson, Pelkey, Churchill, each had two; and Kelsey Turner, one.
For Limestone-MSSM (0-2), Amanda Allen and Savanna Gray both had seven points, while Ashlynn Kelly added four, Danielle Pelkey, three; and Jordyn Hopkins, two.
Fort Fairfield led 18-2, 30-9 and 48-15 at the quarter breaks.
Washburn 57, Central Aroostook 31 — At Mars Hill Friday, Washburn’s Campbell tallied 16 points, while teammate Carmen Bragged added 15 as the Beavers romped past Central Aroostook. Saucier added 10 points for Washburn, while Olson had five; Olivia Doody and Sjoberg, three each; and Fitzpatrick, two.
For Central Aroostook, Grew tallied 15 points, while McIntyre added eight; Long, four and Rachel Grass and Garrison, two each.
Washburn led 21-6, 35-16 and 49-27 at the quarter breaks.
