FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — This year’s 10th Annual Memorial Day Golf Scramble will be held in memory of Fort Fairfield native and Bangor businessman and philanthropist Larry Mahaney, who passed away in February of 2006.
A former standout athlete and teacher at Fort Fairfield High School, Mahaney earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and a master’s degree in education at the University of Maine in the 1950s while also playing basketball. Mahaney was the former chairman of the board and CEO of Webber Energy Fuels and was well known for his support of student-athletes.
A special presentation will be made to the Mahaney family at the awards ceremony. Special guest and family friend, Governor John Baldacci, will also be attending the event and playing in the tournament along with Keith Mahaney, Larry’s brother, and Kevin Mahaney, Larry’s son.
The tournament will take place on Saturday, May 26 at the Aroostook Valley Country Club in Fort Fairfield. This will be a four-person scramble with a 12 p.m. short gun start. Registration will be from 11-11:45 a.m. The field is limited to the first 40 teams. Entry fee is $45 per person and includes a steak or chicken barbeque.
There will be a men’s division, women’s division and a mixed division, with two men and two women. Over $5,000 in prize will be awarded to the top 10 net teams and top four gross teams. In addition, golfers will have a chance to win a 2007 Honda supplied by Harry’s Honda for a hole-in-one. In the nine-year history of the event, two cars have been won, so don’t miss your chance to win this year! Closest to the pin, longest drive and other contests will also be held. An auction will also be held.
The proceeds of this tournament will go to the Fort Fairfield Athletic Boosters Club in their continued support of athletics at Fort Fairfield Middle/High School.
Booster Club President, Larry Gardner stated, “This tournament has really grown since our first one. The field fills up quickly because it is such a great event. All of our sponsors really do a great job for us in donating money and prizes, which help make this such a popular event. We want to especially thank Patriot Mutual Insurance Company for their corporate sponsorship again this year. We hope everyone that plays golf will get a chance to participate in this event. I know that everyone will have a great time.”
