It was recently announced that the Presque Isle High School varsity hockey team won the State Class B Sportsmanship Award for the 2006-2007 ice hockey season. Following an announcement at school, the team was presented the banner by Dave Heald, the athletic director for PIHS.
“Grace in victory and defeat, honest rivalry and courtesy toward all players, coaches and officials are the marks of good sportsmanship,” said principal Eric Waddell. “I am proud to share the news with everyone this morning. Congratulations to the team and to their coaches.”
The team was coached by Dr. Carl Flynn and John Haley. Flynn said he was very proud of the team.
“I had two goals when I became varsity coach in 2005,” Flynn stated. “First, to clean up our image, which this banner proves we have done; and secondly, to win a championship, which we were one away from this year.”
“This award demonstrates that a team can be successful and show sportsmanship at the same time,” said Heald as he was presenting the banner.
