On Saturday, May 12, the Maine Prinicpal’s Association state singles eastern qualifying tourney was held at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. For the boys, in the first round, Ben Picard, of Presque Isle defeated Chris Stanhope, of Shead, 8-4.
In the second round, Shane Belanger, of Caribou, defeated Matthew Patterson, of Shead, 8-0. Also, Alex Carter, of PI, defeated David Levasseur, of Van Buren 8-2; Ben Picard went on to beat Ashir Abouleish, of Houlton, 8-4; Patrick Savage, of Caribou, beat Nathan Beaulieu, of Madawaska 8-0; Case Lancaster, of Caribou, defeated Sam Bell, of Calais, 8-5.
In the qualifying round, Belanger defeater Nick Foster, of Fort Kent, 6-1 and 6-3; Carter defeated Craig Daigle, 6-1 and 6-4; Savage defeated B. Picard, 6-4 and 6-1; Lancaster defeated Thomas Caron, of Fort Kent, 6-1 and 6-2; and Riley Lizotte, of Van Buren, defeated Tyler Levesque, of Madawaska.
On the girls’ side, in the first round, Amy Michaud, of PI, defeated Nicole Daigle, of Madawaska 8-6. In the second round, Susan Lavertu, of Madawaska, defeated Danielle Pelkey, of Caribou 8-0. Allison Dean, of PI, defeated Jessica Caron, of Fort Kent, 8-6; and Michaud defeated Nicole Nadeau, 8-4.
In the qualifying round, Casey Corriveau, of Caribou, defeated Ashley Oliver, of Woodland, 6-0 and 6-1; Dean defeated Taylor Parent, of Van Buren, 6-1 and 6-4; Melinda Plourde, of Fort Kent, defeated Michaud, 4-6, 6-4 and 6-2. Sarah Porter, of Presque Isle, defeated Lauren Lavoie, of Fort Kent, 6-2 and 6-4.
The state singles championship will be held from May 25-May 28 at Lewiston High School and Bates College.
