Sports in brief . . .
Kelsee McLaughlin, a 2009 graduate of Washburn District High School, was a member of the Lancaster Bible College (Pa.) women’s soccer team which competed in last week’s National Christian College Athletic Association championships held in Kissimmee, Fla.
The Chargers beat Baptist Bible College of Clarks Summit, Pa. in the third-place game Friday, 5-1, after dropping a 2-1 decision to Maranatha Baptist Bible College of Watertown, Wis. in the semifinals Thursday. In last Wednesday’s quarterfinal, Lancaster defeated North Central (Minn.), 4-0.
McLaughlin, a sophomore, played defense for the Chargers. She is also a member of the college’s basketball team. She is the daughter of Rev. George and Bonnee McLaughlin of Wade.
Presque Isle High School senior Josh Allen had a pair of assists in the East’s 6-4 loss to the West during Sunday’s Maine Soccer Coaches Senior Bowl held at Hampden Academy.
In the girls game, the West nipped the East, 5-4.
Several other local players competed in the contests. Seniors named to the MSC all-star teams were eligible to compete.
Washburn District High School will host an alumni basketball event Nov. 27, with proceeds to benefit Ryan’s Heart, a local non-profit organization for grieving children and their families.
The girls game will be played at 6 p.m. and the boys game at 8 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students.

There will also be a three-point shooting contest, a 50-50 raffle and some surprises as well.
Monies raised will help Ryan’s Heart establish a self-sustaining scholarship for high school seniors in Aroostook County.
The 25th annual Turkey Trot 5K Road Race will be held Saturday, Nov. 27 at 10 a.m. at Caribou High School. Walkers will set off at 9:45 a.m.
The out-and-back 3.1-mile race is sponsored by Cary Medical Center. Registration begins at 9 a.m. in the CHS gym lobby. The registration fee is $10, which includes a long-sleeved T-shirt to the first 50 to sign up.

Athletes of the week
Presque Isle High School athletes of the week were announced for the last four weeks by the varsity club and Big Cheese Pizza.
The recipients for Oct. 11-16 were Evan Waddell and Alecia Palmer.
Waddell shot a team-best 79 at the state golf qualifier held at JaTo Highlands in Lincoln, while Palmer placed second at the Penobscot Valley Conference cross country championship meet, held in Bangor.
Josh Allen and Shelby Condon were the choices for the week of Oct. 18-23. Allen scored four goals in his team’s 5-0 win over Caribou to cap the regular season, while Condon was the third Wildcat girl to cross the finish line at the regional cross country meet in Belfast.
Matt Eager and Palmer were selected for the honor for Oct. 25-30. Eager was 25th in the boys’ state cross country meet with a time of 17:31 in the meet held at Belfast. Palmer came in seventh in the girls meet and qualified for the New England championships in Vermont.
Stacia Caron was the choice for Nov. 1-6. Caron was a statistician for the girls soccer team and was called an “indispensable part of the team” whose talents were appreciated by her teammates and the coaching staff.
The Northern Maine Board of Approved Soccer Officials announced Saturday the 2010 winners of the annual Butch Shaw Awards, presented to outstanding soccer players during the 2010 season in Aroostook County.
The award is named in memory of Clyde “Butch” Shaw, an outstanding athlete, coach and official in Aroostook County who died in 1985. The winners were selected by a vote of the members of the Northern Maine Board of Approved Soccer Officials.
Winners of the award were:
Class B — Josh Allen, Presque Isle High School; and Jenna Selander, Caribou High School.
Class C — Jared Soucy, Fort Kent Community School; and Rebecca Martin, Fort Kent Community School.
Class D (boys) — Patrick Goodall, Southern Aroostook High School; Cody Robinson, Southern Aroostook High School; and Jordan McLaughlin, Washburn.
Class D (girls) — Brooke LaBelle, Ashland High School; and Parise Rossignol, Van Buren High School.
