ASHLAND NEWS

Milton and Dawn Clark of Ashland recently traveled to Pigeon Forge, Tenn. for the 57-year reunion of the group nicknamed the “Korea Army Buddies,” who are an assembly of men who were in the Army together with Milton. The couple, who spent five days traveling, also enjoyed a visit with their daughter, Kathy, who drove six hours from Collierville, Tenn. While there, they also had the opportunity to share a meal with their granddaughter, Alicia, who is a student at the University of Tennessee, at Calhoun’s on the River. On the Sunday of their stay, they toured Gatlinburg. The rest of the week, they went to meetings, dinner shows and enjoyed other entertainment. The couple was glad to have spent this special time with family and good friends.

THE HARLEM SUPERSTARS BASKETBALL TEAM will be appearing at the Ashland District School Friday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. for a game against the “Ashland Dream Team.” The Superstars are a comedy basketball team (not unlike the Harlem Globetrotters) and provide great family fun for kids of all ages.

The Ashland Dream Team will be coached by Ashland Town Manager and high school boys basketball coach Jim Gardiner, and will consist of the following players: Principal Chris Hallett, Vice Principal Joel Hall, Ashland Recreation Director Lendall Tarr, Ashland alumni and middle school boys basketball coach Lucas Belanger, Alumnus Ronald Fournier and Taylor Baker, 1,000 point alumni and middle school girls basketball and softball coach Jeremy Tarr, middle school boys soccer coach Holly Chasse, and three students from the Ashland Class of 2014 – Nicholas Belanger, Rachel Gillis and Gabby Cyr. Tyler Chasse is lined up as an alternate. The referees for the game will include our very own talented and fair Lynwood McHatten, Peter Belskis and Ron Grover.
The game is full of audience participation and the halftime show includes 20-30 kids chosen from the audience to test their basketball skills. This is an event not to be missed!
The game is being held at the high school and will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Tickets are available at the Ashland District School, Ashland One Stop, the Masardis Trading Post, Ben’s Trading Post in Presque Isle, and the Caribou and Easton recreation departments. Proceeds will benefit the Ashland Class of 2014. For more information, contact Roberta Belanger at 227-6000.
This is gearing up to be a one fun night in Ashland. See you at the game!

Ashland PTO box tops and label contest a rocking success

Twice a year, the Ashland Area PTO holds a box top and Campbell’s label contest for the elementary school children. In the past, each grade/classroom would compete against one another with the winning classroom receiving a special prize. This year, things were changed up a bit!
The PTO decided they would instead set an overall goal of 3,000 box tops and labels for all of the students from pre-K through grade 5, and if they met this goal, they would collectively receive the prize. As PTO member Taunja Jandreau explained to the students, “While it’s nice to have some friendly classroom competition, sometimes it’s also nice to be able to reward all of you that take part. This contest is about being able to buy school supplies and purchasing things like the soccer goals that you use during recess. It’s you, the students, that benefit from this contest.”
To the astonishment of the PTO, the students reached the goal and surpassed it by a whopping 1,158 labels! On Friday, Nov. 5, the students were treated to their prize – a concert by local musicians including some former members of the rock band “Too Far North” who got together just for this special occasion. Members of the band included Sherry Calhoun, Missy Hall, Joel Hall (vice principal at the Ashland District School), Larry Hall and Chris Morton.

Opening the show, Jandreau told the students, “This concert is a way for the PTO to say thank you to all of you students, but a big thank you also goes out to all the parents and we can’t forget to thank the teachers for your support, too. So we set a goal of 3,000 labels and box tops for you to meet, do you want to know just how many were turned in? 4,158 and you should give yourselves a round of applause because that is a great job and all I have to say is YOU ROCK.” Applause, and rock they did!
