Susan Jane Lovely
LOVELY, Susan Jane, 56, PORTLAND, October 17, 2010.
PORTLAND — Our beloved Susan passed away from lung cancer on Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010, with her loving family holding her close. Her endless perseverance, compelling courage and unyielding determination was an absolute inspiration to all who witnessed her struggle.
The daughter of Dana Lovely Sr. and Laila Daly, Susan was born on Nov. 29, 1953, in Presque Isle. After graduating from Presque Isle High School in 1973, she then pursued a degree in Ornamental Horticulture from SUNY Farmingdale. She enjoyed working as a Floral Designer for over 20 years. Following a desire to help others, she obtained her bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Southern Maine. She then fulfilled this dream, working at Crossroads for Women, an agency providing support and rehabilitation for women struggling with substance abuse. Well known for her compassion and tenacity, Susan was especially suited instilling hope and courage, aiding her clients’ recoveries.
Every person that was fortunate to have known Susan will never forget the infectious smile or that gait in which she proudly carried herself on her daily treks, whether it were the sidewalks of Portland, the fields, forests and beaches of Maine she so loved. Her unsurpassed love of Maine’s four seasons, shined in her enthusiasm for skiing, snowshoeing, swimming, kayaking and canoeing the lakes and streams of her beloved Aroostook County and camp at Big Machias Lake. Her boundless energy soared when confronted by any inclement weather, the more formidable the storm, the bigger her smile, yet all of us considered Susan our safe haven.
A favorite time of Susan’s included surrounding herself with family and friends, enjoying great food, music, beautiful flowers and laughter. Being a fabulous cook, her meals so satisfying, dessert often had to wait or was wrapped “to go.” It was her warm and inviting presence that made her house a home; her wonderful aura will forever glow inside our hearts.
Another great passion was discussing and debating current events and politics. She cherished debating any subject and if presented a topic she knew little of, she would tirelessly immerse herself in her life long desire to learn, researching any topic. Our earth angel left us all far too soon and we will forever be impacted by a huge void in our lives. She was blessed to have many wonderful friends and caring neighbors whose company offered constant comfort and support.
Susan was predeceased by her parents; and her sister, Joanne Mahaney.
She is survived by her husband, Wes; daughters, Erica and Meghan Turner, adopted son, Gary Mahaney; siblings, Dana Lovely and Sandra Green; many nieces and nephews; and her loyal feline companions, Trixie and Puck, the pointer.
A celebration of Susan’s life was held 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 23, at Independent Death Care, 660 Brighton Ave., Portland. And as they say in The County, “a spitting and kicking of the dirt” followed at Susan’s home directly after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Crossroads For Women or the Animal Refuge League.
