The University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball team ended their annual spring trip on a high, beating Newbury College 4-1 and 5-3 in a doubleheader. These wins capped a mostly inactive trip as half of the games, four out of eight, had to be postponed due to inclement weather. At the beginning of the week-long trip, the Owls faced Daniel Webster College twice and lost 18-7 and 13-6. They then went on to play Colby-Sawyer College and lost this game 6-2.
Considering the harsh opening followed by the delay of games opposite Wentworth College, Saint Michael’s College, Norwich University, and Southern Vermont College, it came as a pleasant surprise when the Owls played the Nighthawks. Currently, UMPI’s record stands at 3-5, and on Tuesday, they were scheduled to play their only home game opposite Bates College.
The UMPI softball team was a bit more successful on their spring trip. Traveling as far as Virginia, the Lady Owls completed in seven doubleheaders and won the opening three versus Maine Maritime Academy, Mitchell College, and Briarcliffe College. From there, they faced some tough matchups opposite Shenandoah University, Ferrum College, and Randolph-Macon College in a doubleheader. The Lady Owls returned from their trip with a stable 6-8 record.
The teams recently traveled to Waterville and Bangor to play opposite Colby and Husson College. The Owls completed a doubleheader opposite the Mules. In the opener, Mules’ Robert Rosenbaum pitched a four-hit shutout, bringing his team to a win of 13-0. In the second game, the Owls gained some momentum and held Colby to a 7-7 tie, up until the sixth inning when the Mules scored three runs to claim the win at 10-7. The Lady Owls played a doubleheader opposite Husson. Although they were within two runs in both games, the Lady Owls just couldn’t get past the Lady Eagles solid team. They lost the opener 5-3 and the nightcap 12-11.
