Beckum, Plissey win series finale

CARIBOU – The overall leaders in this year’s County Challenge Road Racing Series showed why they are at the top.
Thomas Beckum of Caribou and Susan Plissey of Stockholm were victorious in the Sept. 6 Caribou Labor Day Road Race by sizeable margins. Beckum, who clinched his first title by setting the early pace and finishing the 8K course in 27 minutes and 58 seconds. He was 2:29 ahead of runner-up Alfred Hanscom of Presque Isle.
Plissey, who also won the series in 2007, finished fourth overall out of the 35 competitors with a 32:58 clocking. She took the women’s title by 3:12 over runner-up and last year’s Labor Day race and series champion Marie Strouse.
Two were entered in the walking division as sisters Wendy Robertson of Caribou and Karyn Thornton of Woodland finished one-two on the 5K course with times of 40:53 and 41:48, respectively.
