The Ashland Summer Fest Committee needs you! They are currently looking for community-minded individuals to help plan and organize events for the Summer Fest celebrations scheduled for July 2011. It will be a very special Summer Fest as the Ashland Alumni activities will also be in full swing.
Committee founder and six-year chairperson Debbie Carney will be resigning from her duties with the committee. The remaining members are committed to providing top-notch, family-friendly entertainment, but they need more help!

The Ashland High School Class of 2014 will be hosting the Harlem Superstars Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. in the new Ashland District School. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. The Harlem Superstars are an entertainment basketball team who provide comedic and motivational entertainment, not to mention amazing athletic abilities!
The Class of 2014 has already been super busy raising money and support from local businesses.
The Class is offering a package deal – for $100 you will get two tickets to the show and an 8 x 10 ad that will be posted on the day of the event for all to see. Get yourself or your business noticed! This fund-raiser is sure to be a success! The Class of 2014 appreciates any donation, large or small. There is a Portage Lake Historical Society meeting scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 6:30 p.m. at the Portage Lake Town Office. Anyone who has an interest in Portage Lake history – sharing, learning and preserving – should attend a meeting!
There will be an Ashland Area PTO meeting Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the new school. Anyone wishing to join or sit in on the meeting is welcome to attend. Come on out and give the PTO your ear. They have a lot to say and a lot to do. They need your help!
The Ashland Senior Citizen Club has moved its meeting place. They will now meet at the Forest View Circle in the first building on the left (then proceed to the last door at the end of the building). They will meet every week from April 1-Oct. 31 and every other week from Nov. 1 to March 31. Enjoy potluck meals, guest speakers and entertainment. Everyone is welcome. CCD classes are set to begin for this year. There is a registration day planned for Sept. 19 at the church. You can either fill out your registration forms then or pick them up and mail them in.
Official classes will begin as follows:
• Middle school students (grade 6-8) are set to begin Sunday, Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. at St. Mark’s Church with classes every Sunday thereafter.
• Kindergarten and first-grade students will begin classes Tuesday, Oct. 5 after school (about 2:30 p.m.) at St. Mark’s Church and will proceed every Tuesday.
• Second-grade students will begin their classes Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 2:15 p.m. at the new school in Mrs. Levesque’s classroom.
They are still looking for a teacher for the fourth- and fifth-grade classes. Any one interested should contact Corrine Routhier at 435-6854 or e-mail her at arouthier@roadrunner.com.
The Ashland Area Senior Citizens group meets every Thursday at noon at the Ashland Recreational Center. Any senior citizens wishing to participate in the potluck lunches and meetings are always welcome to attend.
The Portage Lake Over 50’s Club lunch is held on the last Tuesday of every month at 11:30 a.m. at the Town Hall. All individuals 50 and over are invited to attend and can bring a potluck dish to share. For more information, contact Wilza Robertson at 435-6211 or Grace Nason at 435-6373.
The Red Hat Loonies of Portage Lake meet the second Thursday of every month at Dean’s Motor Lodge. Membership dues are $2. Come and have a great meal and a great time, too! For more information, contact Rachel Stevens at 435-635.
