The Maine State
Firefighters Federation Convention
THE WATER BALL EVENT pitted firefighters from different communities against each other in a wet version of tug-of-war, during the last round of competition during Sunday’s firemen’s muster at the fairgrounds in Presque Isle. About 70 departments from across the state and part of New Brunswick took part in the Maine State Firefighters Federation Convention, which began on Friday, Sept. 10 and concluded on Sept. 12. Weekend activities included a Debbie Myers benefit concert for C.A.N.C.E.R., a comedic performance by Bob Marley, an appearance by actor Randolph Mantooth, a parade, annual firefighters’ banquet, a 9-11 memorial ceremony, demonstrations, exhibits by various vendors, the muster and a Kiwanis fund-raiser. Here, firefighters from Washburn, at left, attempt to get the ball past an Easton crew, at right. Whichever team could get the ball past a designated point on the suspended cable was declared the winner. Easton took this round of competition during the semi-finals.
