County girls win New England titles

The New England American Pageant was held in early August at the Ramada Inn in Bangor. Queens were crowned in four age categories. Four-year-old Aubrey LeClair of Madawaska, daughter of Amy LeClair and Jason Gagnon, won the Petite title. She also received the Modeling, Interview and Evening Gown awards. The Jr. Pre-Teen title went to 10-year-old Maddison Cleaves of Presque Isle, daughter of Alan and Carli Cleaves, Jr. She also received the Gown award.
In the Pre-Teen division, 11-year-old Desiree Belanger, daughter of Dickey and Sherry Belanger of Madawaska, was crowned. She also walked away with Interview, and Evening Gown awards. Sixteen-year-old Erica Hemphill of Presque Isle, daughter of Eric and Kelly Hemphill, won the title of Miss New England American Teen. She also received Talent, Photogenic and Evening Gown awards.
The Probus Club of Central Aroostook held it’s monthly meeting at Northern Maine Technical College on Thursday, Aug. 19.
In her new office as president, Karen Sweeney called the meeting to order at 10 a.m. Pearl Carmichael gave humorous readings entitled “Just Call Me A Whoopee” and “Diary of A Week In A New Home.”
Mel Fitzherbert introduced the guest speaker, Martha Grant, attorney at law, who specializes in elderly law. Martha gave a very interesting talk regarding the laws of Maine Care including the qualifications and what is and what is not allowed to be included as income and assets for this program. She spoke about the law regulating nursing home eligibility and how income and assets are evaluated to determine payment. Martha included in her talk the regulations regarding the transferring of assets and trusts and special needs trusts. She concluded her presentation with a question and answer period.
Mel presented Martha with a certificate of appreciation on behalf of Probus.
The revised secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read and approved.
Joyce Davis had an old picture of her grandparents’ house. She read a letter she wrote to her children describing the contents of the photo and what they meant to her.
The guest speaker for the Sept. 15 meeting will be John Cancelarich who will talk about the process of turning canola and mustard into consumable products. The speaker for the October meeting will be Naldo Gagnon, chief of police for Presque Isle.
The meeting was adjourned.
The Star City Senior Citizens met Aug. 26 at the Methodist Church on Fleetwood St. There were 21 members in attendance with no guests present.
President Donna Devoe welcomed all members to the club.
Donald Devoe gave the blessing on the food, which were pizzas, salads and desserts.
After the lunch, President Devoe opened the meeting with a prayer, flag salute and one verse of America. Secretary’s report was read and accepted by members. There was no treasurer’s report.
Our prayers go out to Althea Rice, who has been having problems with her legs and back – hope you’re feeling better. Miss you at the club. We would like to thank Northeast Publishing Co. for our articles being in the paper this week. Not only the members of the club, but those outside the area were able to read the articles. It lets readers know what is going on with our senior citizens in Presque Isle. Again, thank you.
The next meeting will be Sept. 9, with an auction. There is never a meeting the first Thursday of the month.
Birthdays for September are Shirley Warren, Willetta Gaston, Marilyn Tardie and Jean Easler. There are no anniversaries for the month.
A correction on Winnie Brown’s name in the August 12 report. They had her name as Barnes, not Brown. Sorry, Winnie.
American Legion Auxiliary President Betty Wilson of the Ladies Auxiliary of Ray Goding Post 88, took the ladies to Theresa’s Restaurant on June 8th, where they had a wonderful meal.
A short meeting was held and then we adjourned until Aug. 9. Any ladies married to a veteran can join under her husband.
We are having a yard sale at the Post on Presque Isle Industrial Park. Date to be determined later.
The Aroostook F-Stops, a photography club in northern Maine, will be showing club members’ photographs as a collection entitled “Life in Aroostook.” The showing will be on display in the Aroostook Centre Mall starting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, and will run through the entire month of October.
