Washburn Rotary is planning a garage sale in the near future, possibly during the August Festival weekend, and any donations will be gratefully appreciated. To arrange for donations, please contact Charlotte Griffin at 455-8498 or cgriffin@mail2maine.com.
The next scheduled class in caregiver training with instructors Katie Burby and Sharon Ann Berz will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Perham Baptist Church on Tuesday, Aug. 3. A portion of Washburn’s ATV and Snowmobile trail 105 has been temporarily closed due to repair and replacement of the Salmon Brook Bridge as well as clearing some ditches of debris buildup.

Festival changes & updates

The theme for the 30th Washburn August Festival is “The World of Adventure,” and the date for the special weekend is Aug. 20, 21, and 22.
The 2010 king and queen are Sterling and Sandra Haynes and the very special grand marshal is Washburn’s own Arnie Devoe.

Friday:
There will be a free hotdog roast in the parking lot of the Katahdin Trust Company for Customer Appreciation Day, starting 11 a.m, Friday, Aug. 20.
The annual Alumni Supper and Social Time will be held at the high school gym with the social hour at 5 p.m. and dinner following at 6 p.m. Bring a salad, casserole or dessert and your own place settings. Also included in the annual Alumni Supper will be a special 50th Class Reunion being celebrated by the WHS Class of 1960.
There will also be a 20-year reunion of the Class of 1990.
On Friday at 6:45 p.m. there will be a scavenger hunt at Story Park.
At 5:30 p.m. registration for the Bike and Baby parades. The Bike Parade will be held at the town parking lot at 6 p.m. with the Baby Parade immediately following, with the rain location at the Washburn Rec Center.
There will be some food booths open at the municipal parking lot starting at 5 p.m.
The Aroostook County Blue Grass Band will be performing at Story Park starting at 6:30 p.m. with bluegrass and bluegrass gospel favorites. The rain location is the high school gym.
The Family Movie Night will be sponsored by the Washburn Rotary Club and the “theatre” will open at 8:30 p.m. The “feature attraction” will be “How to Train Your Dragon” and will be shown on the wall of the Historical Society barn. Take advantage of the view from the elementary school soccer field. The Washburn Rotary Club will be serving refreshments. Rrain location will be the high school gym..

Saturday:
The Washburn Trail Runners will be holding their annual breakfast from 6 to 9:30 a.m. at the Station Road Clubhouse. The cost is $6 per person and the menu includes scrambled eggs, home fries, French toast, bacon or sausage and coffee or juice.
At 8 a.m. there will be antique tractor registration at the Trail Runners’ clubhouse parking lot on Station Road. The pulls begin at 11 a.m. and there will be a food vendor available and additional parking lot at the high school.
The big parade starts 9 a.m. with registration beginning at 6:30 a.m.
There will be Arts and Crafts at the Story Park, with setup time at 7 a.m; booths open to  public 8 a.m.
Starting at 8 a.m. there will be antique tractor registration and pull at the Penobscot McCrum location on the Parsons Road.
The SCA Medieval Troupe will have a display on the front lawn of the Salmon Brook Museum from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The classic car, bike and tractor registration and show will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. They will be located off School Street across from the elementary school soccer field. There will be a wide array of door prizes and a 50/50 drawing along with a food vendor on site. People’s Choice judging will be held at 12:30 p.m.
The Children’s Carnival will be hosted by the faculty and staff of SAD 45 and scheduled to take place at the post office lawn from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. There will be many activities and games for all ages. Proceeds from this event, along with any donations, will go to benefit Rachel Driscoll who has been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The rain location will be the high school gym.
Sterling Haynes will be giving his famous mini tractor rides at the elementary school parking lot from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Washburn Fire Department will be holding their annual Chicken Barbecue from 11:30 a.m. until they run out. The dinner includes fried chicken, coleslaw, potato, salad chips, rolls and a drink. The fee is $6 per person.
There will be boys’ and girls’ soccer game at the elementary school soccer field at 1 p.m. Washburn will be playing Limestone Jr. High and MSSM.
Mane Event will be giving horse-drawn rides from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This fun form of transportation will be going through town and near all the favorite festival events.
There will be a vehicle fire simulation given at the tennis court near the elementary school, courtesy of the Washburn Fire Department at noon at the corner of School and Churchill streets.
From 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Randy Michaud will be performing his old-time country music at Story Park. Donations will be accepted and the rain location will be at the high school gym.
Washburn Rotary will be holding its annual Rubber Ducky 50/50 Derby with the Mill Pond foot bridge as their launch point at 4 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the Mill Pond Project.
There will be a baked bean supper at the Civic Center from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. sponsored by the Washburn Rotary Club. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for ages 12 and under.
The band Sound Friendship will be performing at Story Park from 7 to 9:30 p.m. with the rain location at the high school gym.
Starting at 2 p.m., there will be a “Hearts for Heaven” balloon release at Story Park. This is being sponsored by Ryan’s Heart, a non-profit organization for grieving families. There will be baked goods available and donations are welcome to support this wonderful cause.
The final event for Saturday will be a giant fireworks display on the hill behind the high school, starting at 9:30 p.m. Rain date will be same time and place on Sunday evening.

Sunday:
The Washburn Trail Runners will be sponsoring a fun canoe and kayak race as a part of the August Festival. The race will begin at or near the Diamond Flats in Wade at the end of the Gardner Creek Road on the Aroostook River on Sunday, Aug. 22, starting at 8 a.m., with the race to begin at 10 a.m. The “checkered” flag will be waved at the end of the race by the boat landing at the Thomas Brewer Memorial Park in Washburn where the door prizes and trophies will be awarded. You may also register by mailing form and check to Washburn Trail Runners, P.O. Box 561, Washburn, ME  04786, Attn. Canoe/Kayak Race. The costs are: $15 per paddler ages 16-64; $12 per paddler ages 65 and older; or $10 per paddler, ages 12-15. Please make checks payable to Washburn Trail Runners.
The Perham Ladies Brunch will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Washburn Civic Center and fire bay. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for ages 5-12 with no cost for children under 5.
The annual Sunday crowd favorite Gospel Concert will be held at high school gym 2-4 p.m.
Please note that Main Street will be closed during certain periods on Friday and Saturday during the weekend, and the Station Road on Saturday for the tractor pulls. The closure will not affect the breakfast served at the Trail Runners’ clubhouse. There will also be some street barricades installed near the Town Park to allow for more free-flowing traffic.

Rec Center schedule

The Summer Free Breakfast and Lunch Program is currently ongoing Monday through Thursday, with breakfast served from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and lunches served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The meals will be served at the elementary school cafeteria and this program will end on Friday, July 30.
On Thursday, July 29, there will be arts and crafts held at the Rec Center. Grades 5-8 will create their works of art from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and grades K-4 will learn new skills from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.
Also on Thursday, July 29, there will be soccer at the elementary school fields with grades K-2 playing from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m., grades 3-4 scoring goals from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and grades 5-8 playing from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
From 10 to 11:30 a.m., on Friday, July 30, there will be a barbecue and some special “end of the summer” activities held at the elementary school. This event will be open to everyone who participated in the summer programs.

Perham news

The Perham Ladies Group is seeking new members. Membership is open to all ladies who reside in Perham and are interested in serving their community; participants will have a great time doing so.
Ellie Snyder-Jordan is available to answer any questions you may have about the group and membership and you may contact her at 455-8016. The Perham Ladies are also seeking any donations for their town welcome baskets and Ellie Snyder-Jordan can give ideas on needed items.
The Perham Ladies will also be putting on the annual brunch held during the August Festival on Sunday, Aug. 22, at the Washburn Civic Center. They are also in need of volunteers and members to help out with the brunch. Phone Ellie Snyder-Jordan at 455-8016 if you are willing and able to help in any way.
On Saturday, Aug. 14, Perham residents are invited to join in conversations with candidate for State Representative Rudy St. Peter and candidate Danny Deveau for state senator. They will be interested in what you want for your county. The meeting will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Perham Town Hall. Refreshments including coffee, tea and sweet snacks will be served.
