EASTON — Town officials continue to keep taxes low, reducing the mil rate for the second year in a row — keeping taxes in the community at one of the lowest levels recorded in Aroostook County.

“Good things are happening in Easton this time of year – tax-wise, that is,” said Town Manager John Hangen.
The selectmen have followed the recommendation of Hangen, reducing taxes for the second consecutive year.
“This year’s mil rate will fall 1 mil, to .01465 or 14.65 mils, which represents approximately a 6.5 percent reduction. The tax commitment has been reduced by $235,633 from last year, which represent the total expenses for the town and school department,” said Hangen.
This year’s commitment, according to the town manager, is just over $2,548,124.
Hangen credited the town’s officials with working to keep spending in line.
“Both the School Board and the selectmen have paid attention to their spending habits over many years, coupled with wise industrial investments and growth in local businesses in town,” he said.
Two major businesses have served as “good neighbors,” helping create jobs and a sound tax base for the town.
“Easton is home to two major industries in Aroostook County – McCain Foods and Huber Engineered Woods. Both companies are very good corporate citizens in Easton. Citizens of Easton appreciate their presence and investments in the town,” said Hangen.
Easton has a population of 1,249 as of the last census. Since 2008, the mil rate has dropped from 20 mils to the 2010 figure of just over 14 mils.
