PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The University of Maine at Presque Isle will be hosting two sessions in May for people who are interested in furthering their credentials in group exercise and aerobics. The Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) will provide instructors for the training.
The two workshops, Practical Skills and Choreography and Primary Group Exercise Certification, can be taken together or separately depending on the interests and skill levels of the interested individuals.
Practical Skills and Choreography, scheduled for May19 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., is a one-day workshop focusing on practical techniques for teaching group exercise classes. A jump start to utilizing safe, effective and creative teaching methods, the program covers such topics as class formatting, creative choreography, and exercise guidelines and standards. This session provides valuable instruction in preparation for participating in the Sunday session which leads to AFFA certification. The workshop fee is $129 plus a required text.
Primary Group Exercise Certification, scheduled for May 20 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., is a workshop for experienced group exercise instructors whose training and educational background has prepared them to take the AFAA Primary Group Exercise Certification exam. The workshop will feature a review of AFAA’s Basic Exercise Standards and Guidelines, anatomy, exercise science, exercise evaluation, and exam criteria. The day will conclude with the practical and written exams. The workshop fee is $299 plus a required text.
“Aerobics certification is a valuable asset on one’s resume when pursuing employment with public or private fitness providers,” said Chris Smith, UMPI’s fitness coordinator.
