Local channels available via satellite

An act signed by President Barack Obama recently will enable television viewers to watch local channels via satellite service. In the past, those who had difficulty receiving local programming either had to do so using cable service or do without.

“President Obama signed the Satellite Television Extension and Localism Act (STELA) into law the end of May, which is great news for many communities, including Presque Isle. This means residents in communities including Presque Isle will now be able to tune in to local programming via DISH Network, which is now the first and only TV company to offer local stations in every market nationwide (all 210 of them),” said Laura Lowery, a DISH spokesperson.
According to Lowery, DISH Network is bringing local channels to Presque Isle residents as of Thursday, June 3, providing the market’s 31,000 households access to their local news, weather and sports via satellite. Channels launching include WAGM-CBS, WAGMD-FOX, WVII-ABC (imported from Bangor), WLBZ-NBC (imported from Bangor) and WNEM-PBS.
“If they’re DISH subscribers, for the first time they can get local news, weather, sports and programming from DISH Network, they just need to modify their subscription. If they aren’t DISH subscribers yet, now they have more choice in pay-TV providers, which may help them save money,” said Lowery.
Many officials worked hard to make this happen including U.S. Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, and U.S. Representative Michaud, said Lowery.
