Football

    PRESQUE ISLE/CARIBOU — Local high school football players will focus on character development and specific skill training when the National Football League’s High School Player Development (HSPD) program comes to Aroostook County with an all-position football camp June 11-12. All programs are free and football players from all area high schools who are entering grades 9-12 (no exceptions) are invited to attend. 

 

    Since its inception in 2001, the NFL’s nationwide HSPD program has provided participants with a curriculum that focuses on inspiring excellence in the classroom, community, and on the playing field. The program is free for students and participation in the program is expected to include more than 15,000 high schoolers in 29 states nationwide. The character development portion includes skilled speakers, practical life lessons, preparation for standardized tests and discussions on life after high school. This part of the program will be on Friday evening, June 11, from 6:30-9:30 p.m. in Folsom 105 on the UMPI campus.
    On-field components of the HSPD program include fundamental skill development by position, reviews and individual competitions. This phase will be held at Sincock Field in Caribou on Saturday, June 12, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 to 6 p.m.
    HSPD player registration information has been sent to Aroostook Football high school coaches in the area. Wrestling

    CARIBOU — Wrestlers interested in honing their skills with a world-renowned grappler will have an opportunity June 7-11 as Caribou High School hosts the James “Chico” Hernandez Wrestling Camp.
    The camp will be held from 6-8 p.m. at Teague Park School in Caribou and is open to any youths up to the age of 18 who are interested in learning more about wrestling.
    The cost of the week long camp is $40 per person or $50 for families. There is a maximum of 40 participants for this camp. To pre-register, send checks sent to “Caribou Athletic Dept.” Registration forms can be obtained from CHS.
    There will be a registration session on the first day of the camp at 5 p.m.
    Hernandez was a high school coach, university coach and has done many clinics in England, Rhode Island, Illinois, Ohio, Vermont, West Virginia and Kansas. He was born in 1954 in Chicago, Ill and is accomplished in the sport of Sombo wrestling, winning numerous medals. He is a five-time member of the US National Team.

Basketball

    PRESQUE ISLE – The 19th annual Wildcat Basketball Camp is being offered to students entering grades 3-8 and will be held June 14-17 at Presque Isle High School.
    The camp is under the direction of PI boys varsity basketball coach Tim Prescott and PI girls varsity basketball coach Jeff Hudson. Staff will include coaches from PIHS along with present and former players from the varsity teams.
    Fundamentals in the game will be stressed. There will be basketball drills, individual games and regular basketball games. Sportsmanship will be emphasized.
    The times are 1:30-3:30 p.m. for grades 3,4 and 5 and 3:30-5:30 p.m. for grades 6, 7 and 8. The cost is $30 per student, with family discounts offered. Call the PIHS Athletic Office at 764-6507 for more information.
