WASHBURN NEWS

by Christie Cochran

Members of the Washburn Rotary Club have been active during the past few weeks. Among their activities, they helped plan and co-host the annual Canoe, Kayak and Bicycle Fun Run along with Presque Isle Rotary. The excursions took place along our local riverway and ATV trails, with the ‘paddlers’ leaving Washburn’s Thomas Brewer Park boat landing and heading along the Aroostook River to the Presque Isle Fish and Game clubhouse for additional festivities, including a special barbecue.

Part of the day-long event was the first-time inclusion of bicycle riding along the ATV trail, and the ‘pedal-ers’ enjoyed the beautiful day on the trails. The cyclists were escorted and guided by Rotarians on an ATV, including Washburn’s Charlotte Griffin and Andre Maciel, a Rotarian from southern Brazil. He is in the area as a part of a Rotary group study exchange program and has traveled through cooperation with the Northern Maine and New Brunswick Rotary District.
Washburn’s Rotary Club also made a donation to the WDHS DestiNation Imagination State Champion teams. The teams raised funds in order to travel to Knoxville, Tenn., for the Global DI competition.
Upcoming items on the Rotary’s ‘plate’ include their active affiliation with the Washburn August Festival.
