PI ’Cats, CA Panthers both 2nd in standings

    The Presque Isle Wildcats moved all the way up to second place in the Eastern Maine Class B baseball standings thanks to a 3-0 week, capped by a doubleheader sweep of Mount Desert Island at home Saturday. 

    The ’Cats are now 9-3 overall with 73.8281 tournament index points and trail only Waterville (11-1, 91.6016) in the rankings.
    Presque Isle has four games remaining: a single game at Fort Kent Thursday, a home doubleheader against Bucksport Monday and a contest at Caribou next Wednesday, June 2.
    In Class D, the Central Aroostook Panthers remain in second place with their 12-1 mark and 53.3854 tournament index. They are less than four tournament index points behind first-place Shead of Eastport (10-2, 57.2404). The Panthers have pointworthy games remaining at Madawaska today and against Wisdom in St. Agatha next Wednesday, June 2.
    Currently out of the top nine and the current playoff picture are 11th-place Fort Fairfield (5-6, 13.6012), 13th-place Ashland (3-8, 6.6964) and 15th-place Washburn (1-12, 1.9531).
    Summaries of games played through Monday, May 24 follow:
    Presque Isle 11, MDI 6 – Zac Campbell and Amos Dean combined for eight hits, while Steven Ford contributed three more as PI came through with the victory Saturday in game one of the twinbill.
    Matt Chasse added a double and two RBIs for the winner, who banged out 16 hits in the contest. Dillon Kingsbury, Ethan Braley and Brennen Shaw combined on the pitching duties for the Wildcats, who trailed 4-0 before rallying for the win.
    Presque Isle 10, MDI 1 – In game two, the Wildcats drubbed the Trojans behind Chasse’s complete-game four-hitter. Kingsbury had three hits and two RBIs, Chasse two hits and four RBIs and Campbell and Shaw added a pair of hits each for the winners.
    So. Aroostook 16, Washburn 0 – At Washburn Friday, Travis Casey pitched a two-hit shutout in leading Southern Aroostook past Washburn.
    Nick Bragg and Justin Howe singled for the Beavers’ only hits in the game.
    Wisdom 20, Ashland 0 – In another rout Friday, the Pioneers handled the Hornets in Ashland.
    The hosts managed just two hits – singles by Lucas Hafford and Allan Michaud.
    Fort Fairfield 13, Limestone-MSSM 3 – Austin Bernier earned the pitching victory and supported his own cause with a double, single and an RBI as the Tigers rolled last Wednesday.
    Josh Churchill had a double and a single and drove in a run for the winners, while Landon Towle singled twice.
    Central Aroostook 25, Washburn 0 – The Panthers used a 13-run third inning and unleashed a 26-hit attack to easily down the Beavers last Wednesday in Washburn.
    Dan Brewer and Logan McLaughlin each hit a double and four singles with five RBIs to lead Central Aroostook’s offensive barrage.
    Kasey Brewer, who hit a two-run homer in the first inning, combined with Mitch Folsom on the one- hitter for the Panthers.
    Sal Viola doubled in the second inning for the Beavers’ only hit.
