The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday morning, May 18, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. Members were reminded of the upcoming meeting on June 21 about the local historical society that is forming. They were also reminded of the annual golf tournament planned for June 26-27. Special guests were Don Zillman and Rachel Rice of the Presque Isle Rotary Club.
The special speaker was Dr. Donald Zillman, who has served as president of the University of Maine at Presque Isle since 2006. During his time at UMPI, he has led several major initiatives. UMPI is the first university in Maine to move forward on installing a wind turbine on campus.
The process began in 2002 with planning and research. The campus hoped to both reduce the carbon footprint of the campus and help reduce energy costs. By November 2008, the contract was signed for the construction, with ground work beginning immediately. The first parts arrived in April 2009, with the turbine beginning operation with the flip of a switch in May 2009.
It was hoped that the turbine, which only needs 12 mph winds to turn the blades, would reduce the annual energy costs of the university by $100,000 a year. With the first 10 months’ figures available to date, the current savings total $91,750. The campus should easily see the savings they hoped for. Dr. Zillman noted that through some of the summer months, the electrical needs of the campus were completely met by the windmill.
Dr. Zillman also spoke about Question 2 on the upcoming vote. With support of this bond issue, the UMPI campus would see around $475,000 in funds, which would be utilized to replace the oil boiler in the main classroom building.
The Mars Hill, Blaine and Westfield Senior Citizens met Wednesday at the Mars Hill Snowmobile Club. The 12 members present enjoyed sandwiches, soup and sweets.
Gwen McEntee opened the meeting. Don Cadrette asked the blessing and gave the invocation. Following the flag salute, members sang “God Bless America.” The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read and accepted.
The next meeting will be a potluck dinner on June 2.
The United Methodist churches in Mars Hill and Easton will be combining for services throughout the summer. They will be holding service some Sundays in Mars Hill and some in Easton. A schedule for the summer will be posted next week.
