CASINO WOULD AID EDUCATION
Peter Martin, spokesperson for Black Bear Entertainment, visited with members of the Fort Fairfield Rotary Club, sharing information about a proposed casino downstate. Martin told the group that on Nov. 2, 2010, voters of Maine will be asked to endorse the Oxford Resort Casino. He explained that a majority of the tax revenues will support K-12 education in every county and municipality in Maine. He said Aroostook County can expect to receive over $1 million from the resort to support K-12 education. The resort is expected to provide $7 million to scholarships dedicated to the Maine Community College System and University of Maine System. Unlike gaming initiatives of the past, the Oxford Resort Casino will, according to Martin, provide revenue to support K-12 schools, Maine colleges and universities, and property tax relief as well.
