WASHBURN — A local librarian has been charged with theft, following an investigation that began at the Washburn Memorial Library in March.
“On March 18, after receiving a request from the town of Washburn, the Maine Attorney General’s Office opened an investigation into possible criminal activity at the Washburn Memorial Library. Barring any new developments, this investigation has been completed,” said Sheriff James Madore, Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office.
Evidence was collected from the library, as the investigation continued.
“On May 13, Dan Robertson, a detective with both the ACSO and the Attorney General’s Office, issued a summons to Katherine Corey, 51, of Washburn. Corey was charged with theft by unauthorized taking or transfer, a Class E crime,” said Madore.
Corey is alleged to have failed to turn in a $450 refund on a faulty computer.
“Corey is scheduled to be arraigned at the Maine District Court in Caribou on July 8. If convicted of a Class E crime, she could receive a fine of up to $1,000 and/or a jail sentence of up to six months,” said Madore.
