Easton man takes part in Moot Court Competition
EASTON NEWS
Chad Wilcox, a 2003 graduate of Easton High School and member of the graduating Class of 2010 at the University of Maine School of Law, traveled to New Orleans in February to compete in the John R. Brown Admiralty Moot Court Competition.
Moot Court is an extracurricular activity at many law schools in which participants write court briefs and present oral arguments in simulation of a United States Supreme Court appeal. At the John. R. Brown competition, Chad and fellow teammate, Matthew Kanwit, also a member of Maine’s Law Class of 2010, competed against 25 other teams from around the nation.
In preparation for the competition, each team is randomly assigned to write a court brief arguing for either the petitioner or the respondent. During the three-day competition, however, teams were required to present arguments on both sides of the case. These arguments, in which the scope of U.S. admiralty jurisdiction was at issue, were heard at the Federal District Court in New Orleans.
While Maine Law’s team was eliminated before reaching the final round of competition, they were awarded the “Best Newcomer” plaque, and Matt was ranked the sixth highest-scoring individual arguer. Beyond participating in the competition, Chad and Matt attended various events hosted by Tulane School of Law including a crawfish boil and a law firm social hour.
Chad and Matt were invited to participate in the John R. Brown Competition because they are members of Maine’s Law Moot Court Team. Each fall, second-year students at Maine Law compete for positions on the school’s Moot Court Team. Members of the team spend their second year “coaching” the first-year law students on the arts of oral argument and brief writing. During the third year, members of the Moot Court receive credit for competing in one of the many national Moot Court competitions, such as the John R. Brown Competition. Moreover, two second-year Moot Court members are selected each year to argue a mock argument before the Maine Supreme Judicial Court at the University’s annual “ Prize Argument.”
For the Class of 2010, Chad and Matt were the distinguished “Prize Arguers,” selected to present argument before Maine’s highest court.
Chad is the son of Tim and Mary Wilcox, of Easton.

Each top is worth 10 cents. Just place them in an envelope or baggie with your child’s name on them and the grade they are in to be counted toward the collection contest. The Box Tops site, www.boxtopfor education.com, has regular promotions to win prizes and bonus Box Tops for our school. The more people that enter, the more chances we have to win.
The totals are not official, but this year we have earned more than any other year since we began the program. Did you know that you can even become a fan of Box Tops on Facebook?
